Think the title explains itself, which game did you like better on the N64, Diddy Kong Racing or Mario Kart 64? I do feel like the answer will come down to which one you had as a kid, like I had Diddy Kong Racing and generally don't like Mario Kart 64 with it being probably at the bottom of my personal Mario Kart ratings with Double Dash being on top. So I do love the Mario Kart series as a whole, but 64 was a real low point in my opinion especially since I keep putting it up against Diddy Kong. Especially as a kid with Diddy Kong having a hub world, multiple missions, several vehicle types, and a story on top of your standard Kart features really gave kid me a lot to do besides wrecking my little brother in multiplayer. But boy did I wreck him, especially in the Ice Pyramid battle stage. So which of the 2 Kart racers would you choose if you could only have 1 of them? Think it's evident by now my pick is Diddy Kong.

id say mariokart 64 as its a milestone in the mariokart franchise as the first 3d mariokart and implemented the main 3d mariokart quality standard (so no cheating ai) and diddy kong racing felt kind of like a bad spinoff (like knuckles chaotix)

I would never want this game

What the fuck are you guys talking about

I don't think I can choose. Diddy Kong Racing's single player campaign crushes Mario Kart's single player mode. I spent so much time as a kid unlocking every single thing in that game. I didn't play the single player in Mario Kart a lot but when it comes to multiplayer we played a lot more Mario Kart.

We played a ton of multiplayer Mario Kart. I find the Mario Kart tracks to be a lot more memorable too. I can still close my eyes and run through every track in that game in my head and it's been like 20 years since I played it last. The powerups are more fun and I prefer the way Mario Kart handles over Diddy Kong. That being said, DKR looks nicer, has catchier music, has planes and hovercrafts and also has some great tracks.

I dunno. I pick both. I'd be equally as happy playing either one of them honestly.

Well, I mostly only played Mario Kart 64, so I don't have much of a choice. By the time I owned a Diddy Kong racing cartridge I was too old to care too much.

When I tried playing the campaign of Diddy Kong Racing, I insisted on using the crocodile character, which I later found that it kinda has bad stats which explains the frustration I had.

All I can say is:

I'M BANJO! WHOOOOAAAA!

One of the wintery Christmas like stages from Diddy Kong has it's music stuck in my head rent free. I haven't played the game in like 2 decades but I can vividly still hear that song :p

If I remember right Krunk/Krush whatever his name is has like the highest top speed but the rest of his stats is terribad. I always ended up as the turtle or mouse for fastest acceleration. Though if I were to play now would probably be as Timber

I prefer Mario Kart 64, although in every game after that where Diddy Kong was available as a character, I played as him. So I guess I play Mario Kart to watch Diddy Kong racing.

Is it true that tapping the gas button in Diddy Kong makes the kart speed increase beyond what holding the gas button would?

Wait, there's supposed to be a MarioKart game that doesn't have cheating AI?? Have I been bamboozled?

I'm a lifetime member of the MarioKart Apologist Club and I enjoyed Mario Kart 64 but I'll still give this win to Diddy Kong Racing for the following reasons:

  • DKR had flying and water tracks before MK did
  • DKR's track bosses (and their musical themes) are awesome
  • DKR has legitimate shortcuts while in MK64, you have to exploit the game engine's weird collision interactions to cheat, e.g. driving on top of the walls in Wario Stadium
  • MK64 has really weird collision. Large characters like Bowser can inexplicably clip through hazards like the cars on Toad's Turnpike
  • MK64's dramatic kart flip could cause your character to fall through the map

I always thought DKR was really neat. MK was good if you just wanted a racing game, but DK had an actual campaign.

And while MK64 is more traditionalist maybe it's more arcade like?
If you're playing solo, Diddy Kong Racing is usually the way to go because the the single player campaign has more content than the one in MK64. Stick with MK64 if you want something more straightforward.

Why isn't the RC Car Frantic Factory Race from Donkey Kong 64 in the poll?

Not a fan of DKR. I feel like the rebound acceleration and bonuses given to the AI during races was completely unbalanced and cheap whereas Mario Kart 64 was more a test of driving skill alone. DKR is probably the better game but MK64 is one of my favorite racers so this is a no-brainer for me.

Mario Kart 64. While I love roaming around in Adventure mode, and variety in Diddy Kong Racing, Mario Kart 64 just perfected the racing genre on N64 with fair gameplay, memorable tracks and freaking Wario.

Diddy Kong Racing curbstomps Mario Kart 64. I am a casual gamer but I will go out on a limb and state the only game where Rare did not outclass Nintendo was with the unreleased Dinosaur Planet. Given the release of Starfox Adventures I think it is safe to say that Nintendo wouldn't have been bested in the action adventure genre. Both N64 Zelda's remain masterpieces.

Conker is just a masterclass in game design. DK64 and Banjo games illustrate Rare's ability to make fantastic 3D platformers as well.

It is not that Nintendo's Super Mario 64 or to remain on topic Mario Kart 64 are bad by any means. They were revolutionary in transitioning their respective franchises masterfully into 3D (not arguing they created either genres) they just played it too safe. They are 8-9/10 games imo.

Diddy Kong Racing added a campaign filled with content, a hub world, mini games (okay Mario Kart 64 has battle arena too I guess), multiple vehicle types etc. Diddy Kong Racing was just more ambitious and well executed.

Why are there people who think the MK64 AI players weren't cheating like their lives depended on it? I'm actually curious. This is a documented phenomenon.

The AI is cheap not only rubber bands the player, but also poop out annoying fake item blocks and bananas out of nowhere.
