It's true! Beats out even Miracle Warriors on the Master System by roughly 6 months (Phantasy Star was shortly after).
I made this to talk about it, which if anything gave me a chance to talk about this system. It also has connections to my previous video, which you can find here.

Welp, here you go. Apologies if it sounds a little rougher than my usual work.

Emulated a few SG1000 games like Dragon Wang ::sailor-embarrassed(don't laugh I didn't name it) Sega Ninja, Girl's Garden (even for what it's on it's a bad game) and Gulkave (a fun side-scrolling shoot 'em up) Never really tickled my fancy game-wise, but eh it's always fun to see a company's roots, like Nintendo's Game & Watch line ::sonic-waiting

I feel like if the Black Onyx was my first introduction to RPGs, I wouldn't want to play one ever again. Thank god dungeon like this has gone the way of the dodo. Excellent video, Eclipse.

I played this game once and it's not bad but I didn't know what to do because the game system is a WRPG but it is understood by that and also that this game was the last official game of the SG-1000 in Japan.

the 1st-person dungeon exploration is a nightmare on this but thank fuck Phantasy Star refined it. I feel PS4 should've given it a 16-bit GPU shot. I'm sure it was tried for PS II but didn't work n was deemed too clunky.

I think FDS has this game n its sequel? either that or Black Onyx is not the only game with choppy nightmare 'Hunt-the-Wumpus' labyrinth bullshit around that time

I might have to try this one out. The Master System always struck me as the perfect system for 8-bit RPGs, and lately I've been on a run of trying some of them out.

I had a chance to get my hands on an SG-1000 a few years ago that sadly fell through, but I've always been interested by SEGAs earlier systems pre-master system, but trying to actually get a chance to try any of them out is pretty rare outside of retro game conventions when sometimes you'll see a display model or one set up in those gaming areas they sometimes have.

This game sounds like it's interesting, despite what a lot of people are saying about the 1st person dungeon crawling. If I can make it through Akalabeth I feel like I should at least be able to give Black Onyx a run for its money.

Well, I do usually say that almost every system has something for it, and all one has to do is take a dive to see what you find. If it doesn't work out, what can you do?
Gulkave is pretty awesome, though.

The original Famicom had a completely reprogrammed version known as "Super Black Onyx". The Fire Crystal would not get on any home console (mainly because it's an expansion pack, in essence).

there's actually not many, unless you count Game Gear or OW-Action like Golden Axe ZeL... I mean Warrior

The main ones in familiar with are:

Ultima 4
Phantasy Star
Ys: The Vanished Omens

I know golden axe warrior is also sort of an RPG but its more action oriented as you say.

I want to put more RPGs on SmS tbh lmao

Spellcaster has RPG elements but yea action not RPG or JRPG... other games like WB/Monster World series n Lord of the Sword n even Anmitsu Hime/Alex Kidd: High Tech World have quest elements... or go around checkin rooms with High School! Kimengumi lol... as far as OW-Action I'd take Golvellius: Valley of Doom (my fav SMS game so ofc... love Compile) over Golden Axe Warrior any day

Game Gear has a Lunar n Defenders of Oasis n I think a Madou Monogatari is translated... then there's that game where you go around through a forest in the dark scrolling like Gauntlet lol... or Phantasy Star Gaiden or the 1st person adv of Phantasy Star Adventure (unless I have the 2 mixed up? ughh lol) - Ax Battler is a JRPG Golden Axe n had more fun with it than Warrior

I'm sure I'm forgettin a small few but you get the gist... n I agree I think both Master System n GenMD should've gotten a LOT more RPGs... I'm goin back to my childhood in the 80's to start a protest xD
