Saturn Did you have a saturn back in the day?

In 96, not long after NiGHTS came out here. Cool system, I enjoyed mine quite well until I learned the pains of the saved dying along with the little watch battery, heh. I still played after that but had a cart for saves then. I kinda wish I'd kept all that stuff, but I'm glad it went to someone who was going to enjoy for the first time, the same way I had.

I had one in the late '90s, towards the later days of the system's life. It came with the special Christmas sale triple pack-in - Daytona USA, Virtua Cop, Virtua Fighter 2. I loved the system at the time but wish it did better in the West so games would've been easier to find. I would mostly rent games rather than buy as a kid and there weren't that many Saturn games at the local stores, I would often rent the same ones. Legend of Oasis, Virtual Hydlide. Couldn't find the other RPGs so I ended up playing them later.

I like the way you're thinking, hope that someone enjoy the console for the first time

I never owned one, but my cousins did, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. The start-up, the menus and the games.

I've bought my Saturn in july/1997 and it came with three games: Daytona, Virtua Fighter 2, Virtua Cop and Sega Rally and I've enjoyed it company up to 2005, when it broke.

Then I had to buy another. Actually two other, one being japanese and other american. Both are working fine these days.

I have a total of 87 games, including some rare ones, like Panzer Dragoon Saga, Guardian Heroes, Burning Rangers and Shining force III. All US versions.
I also have a few japanese games: Alien Trilogy, Princess Crown, Tryrush Deppy, Steamgear Mash, Willy Wombat, Whizz, Super Tempo, Keio Flying squadron 2, Ninpen Man Maru, Riglord Saga 2, Gungriffon II, Super Tempo and Silhouette Mirage. Detail: I do not understand japanese.
And one european: Bug!

And not to mention, the emulation for the system has come a long way, so there’s ways to go back easily. I’ve said before as well that there’s plenty of great, decently inexpensive games even today if you go the Japanese route!

I didn't own one for myself until well into the 2000s, but I had a few friends who had one over the years.

I remember being really interested in it, but no one I knew had any decent games ::eggmanlaugh

I eventually got it myself and had a handful of interesting Saturn games like Virtual Hydlide and Croc. It was a good time, but not really a broad enough library of games to make it worth keeping over other systems when I'm trying to be space/stuff conscious.

Yes I had a SEGA Saturn back in the 90s. Mine came with the 3-game bundle of Virtua Cop, Virtua Fighter 2, and Daytona USA along with demo disc Bootleg Sampler. I decided to choose this system to be my first 32-bit console (also first SEGA system) since most of my favorite arcade games were by SEGA.

I would use it to play Audio CDs, soundtracks and artist albums (Weird Al Yankovic for example). Would eventually own 3D controller that came with Nights into Dreams as well. I would rent the limited available games at Block Buster Video and would eventually buy a few using COD on the back of VG magazines.

Left: My (2nd) Nights into Dreams I bought at a used game store in the mid 2000s. Right: Import Nights into Dreams I bought around 2010.

I enjoyed the console very much, until I owned SONY PlayStation in late 98. Although only a few years later in the early 2000s I would discover back-ups / ISOs (and mIRC, Torrents, file-sharing) that would rekindle my love particularity for SEGA Saturn.

I remember reading VG magazine reviews, previews it was always seen as the third best system of that generation losing to Nintendo and Sony home consoles. Criticizing it's 3D capabilities (which was the craze back then). I would always defend it, since I knew about the amount of imports that didn't make their way overseas; and TRULY appreciated the arcade software that was incredible at the time like X-Men vs. Street Fighter with the 4MB RAM cart addition.

My original black North American SAT with (1) controller, and loose Robo Pit.

I pre-ordered Die Hard Arcade at Toy R' Us for about 54.99 USD since it was my favorite arcade beat'em up to play. One of the last games I owned used was Guardian Heroes, fond memories playing with my friend for hours on end unlocking all the enemies to play in versus mode.

I have a multiple CD storage cases filled with back-up games. Top selection for SAT, then PS1, and last DC.

Import white SAT with Sakura Taisen themed memory cart, (1) original gray controller and (1) white controller

Fast-forward a few years my original black NA model lens has finally started to bog down. In 2010 I would import a white HST-3220 model with memory cartridge. Decided to start collection Japanese CIB games. Ended up with twenty games or so, which was short lived since only in a few years prices started to substantially rise.

various import games I've collected around the early 2010s. were much more affordable back then.

Today opinions on the legacy of the system have changed, which is refreshing to see. SEGA Saturn remains my all-time favorite home console for its large library of arcade-oriented software, unique game styles, and original IPs which debut or stayed exclusive to it.

What I’ve learned from this thread is that a lot of people hopped in with this bundle. Makes sense. It’s one of the best deals I’ve ever seen for a system. With what we know now, it’s clearly desperation from SOA, but it’s still a massive benefit to the consumer.

Shame that like 6-7 months after that holiday 96 bundle happened, Bernie Stolar dropped the quote that effectively killed the system in the west. They could've at least transitioned smoothly from Saturn to Dreamcast if he hadn't put that out there.

Never saw a Saturn in the wild, back when it as "relevant"... Most of my exposure came from a few Spanish gamepro magazines from around 96.
As people had said the Saturn was almost invisible in store presence around here, contrary to all the other Sega consoles had a pretty good presence in my lands.

I had a Saturn. I was very happy with the games I was able to find but the stores had a very limited selection. Mostly I played the 3 included games Virtua Fighter, Virtua Cop, and Daytona USA. Clockwork Knight was cool and Fighters Megamix brought lots or replayability. Die Hard Arcade was another of my favorites. Sonic Jam too, I really liked that little 3D Sonic World minigame with the museums and art gallery.

My brother had a playstation and it always seemed like game stores were 80% playstation and 20% saturn so it felt kinda like I had the worse system. Years later with emulation Im finding Saturn had more games than I knew about.
