The latest game that isn't on disc and requires a download is DOOM: The Dark Ages:

doomdark.jpg

Neither the Xbox Series X or Playstation 5 version's on the disc.

This is yet another game in an increasingly long list of Xbox first-party titles and/or exclusives that aren't on disc, require online to function, and/or are online only:

- Halo Infinite (Not on disc, requires download)
- Starfield (Not on disc, requires download)
- Forza Horizon 5 (Not on disc, requires download, no physical presence at all on PS5)
- Redfall (While this game eventually received offline support, the version on disc is online only)
- Indiana Jones and the Great Circle (Not on disc, requires download on both XSX/PS5)
- S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl (Not on disc, requires download, hopefully the inevitable PS5 version will be playable from disc)
- Forza Motorsport 2023 (Not on disc, requires download, always online)
- Xbox Smart Delivery Games (The vast majority of these have the inferior Xbox One version on the disc and require the Series version to be downloaded)

Then there are games like South of Midnight and Hellblade II which didn't receive a physical release.

Currently, the only good physical Xbox Series/PS5 releases are those that are published through Limited Run Games such as Pentiment, Quake 1 and 2, the various Doom releases, and Grounded since they're actually on the disc.

No kidding, it is a business after all, let us be honest, none of the companies are particularly interested in preserving any kind of games.

This task will always fall upon "Us" the buyers/people who care, who see this hobby as something more than a "business"

We can't and we should never take this for granted, sites like this are a safe heaven for games but more importantly, for the hobbits.

Keep on keeping on

Not very surprised, TBH.

EA's president used to make similarly bold claims before murdering his own games left and right.

Well... that's how it's always been in some ways.
For years we couldn't wait for decent Xbox and Xbox 360 emulators.
Now we have xemu, which is still not perfect (90% of the library is playable) and Xenia, where probably not even half of the 360 games are playable.
Why? Because somehow you don't see the same community involvement as with Playstation's and Nintendo consoles emulators.

There's literally no reason to buy microsoft's games on console anymore, it's better to buy their pc versions and crack them so that you can make backups.

I truly do believe that the 360/PS3 era was the last time that gaming was about gaming, and not the money it was making. I'm not all doom and gloom about it, but I do wish there could still be some focus on caring. Yeah, I know people are gonna tell me to buy indie games, but honestly outside of a select few it's kinda bad on that side too. I think it'll get better eventually, but not before it gets worse. I think this current generation has a lesson to be learned by these companies, and hopefully they realize that soon, if at all.

I agree with this. As soon as they started to eliminate midnight releases, removal of booklets, using the term consumer instead of gamer, and simplified backsides of physical copies of games; I knew it would get worse. And here we are. Ubisoft publicly stating that people should be comfortable not owning their games. That goes beyond treating your audience like they're stupid. That's doubling down on the BS.
This only furiously promotes piracy and I'm here for it. Preserving digital edition of games throughout practically every damn platform is such an impressive and necessary feat. We came a long way since SNES emulation/english translated roms.

It's simple, there must be a process to stiff arm stakeholders out of the gamer space. Look to the past, there was passion in just about every game that released and it was released in complete condition. No day 1 patch. I do hope that Indie studios gain enough traction to compete with the giants. Let the giants fail and fall. We had good memories of them until they lived long enough to become the villain.

Phil Spencer and randy"devil pitchford" And Peter Molyneux. All 3 have one thing in common they are snake oil sales men and pathological liars if you even believe a single word they say then well your the one to blame. Fool me once shame on me, Fool me more than 1 time then I must be gullible as hell.

Did you see the video of Greasy Randy Pitchford talking about making Borderlands 4 match Nintendo's prices. Like, get real, you already alienated like half the fanbase with the last game. You aren't that guy pal.

Microsoft say it because it was an easy way to get some "good will" from players. Look no further rather than last year showcase:

"We at Microsoft are fully committed to game presentation and are pushing all the tech we can to do so, now lets take a look at our new xbox for you to buy:"

*Only digital console*

The played us like fools.

I have a PS5 (the main reason: physical games) and on a debate in the announcement of Oblivion remake I saw many xbox users surprised that Sony actually puts their games on the discs instead of just 300kb keys.

So yeah, they dont care about it.

why even bother to release a disk? cases rarely even come with a cool manual anymore, too.

Tbh I don't have any modern consoles, mostly because I don't have the money for that so I grew up mostly with an old xbox 360 and my nintendo 3ds when I was younger (younger than I am now). I still find surprising you get sold a "physical copy" that's (from what I've seen from others) just a key that you insert in the console. I've seen you still need the disk to play when I've tried friend's or family consoles, so atleast it doesn't turn into an expensive paperweight... unless the company doesn't want you to have fun anymore

Yeah....sony does this too and probably will do it more often now that nintendo is, not to mention the update bs, the only way to get preservation these days is to get a pc game and crack it after all the updates, then burn it to hard media.

The whole model is tragic. I hope that gamers continue to work hard to preserve what can be preserved. Because the companies don't care. After they make their money they go on to the next thing.

its always up to us the gamers to preserve the games and the games historical value

the companies just want to make money not preserve games

Microsoft sold a $95 physical of Avowed that was just a steelbook with no disc in it. They sold a case to hold a disc without a disc inside. 😂 So dumb.

Nothing is preserved unless you are able to back up all downloads and if you have full games on physical discs/carts. No license expiring BS. No renting games temporarily and then having them taken away even after paying full price for them.

You can see the grease from Randy's face even in that gif. Jesus Christ.
