Hello I live under a rock so if someone has been keeping up with the scene after the great citra purge I would love your insights. Bonus if it works on steamdeck.

azaharplus, for sure , tho citra mmj is still good if you're using a phone , especially a low end one

Thanks. I actually tried azaharplus but it had performance issues with mh4u so i just went back to the last citra build ::sailor-embarrassed. But yeah I will have to give it another try then since citra is having issues with other games.

Using opengl or Vulkan?

Regular Azahar readded support for .3ds extensions. No need to use Azahar plus anymore.

Azahar seems to be the best. This site have comprehensive infos about them.

There's a ton of 3DS emulators out there, but most of them are made by hobbyists who update them very infrequently since the emulators were nothing more than side projects for them to get their feet wet in the programming space. That, or they made them for fun. This is stuff like Panda3DS, Tanuki3DS, 3beans, etc.

Pretty much everything else is just forks of Citra.

Mikage looked very promising, but the developer seemed skittish when it came to actually releasing it for whatever reason. They made the code open source back in 2025, only to become radio silent afterwards.

Azahar is the way to go these days. Only go back to Citra if you're having trouble with game compatibility or performance.

Edit: I've heard Citra MMJ is alright if you're playing on mobile phones. Never tried it myself though.

Doesn't help that i can't try vulkan on citra because of how they packaged it for linux.

Very nice
hmm, I thought Vulkan had great support on Linux but i'm not entirely sure about that. I used to use a linux based layer called DXVK that allowed direct3d applications to run on Linux with complete Vulkan support through Wine.

Vulkan yes, the weed they used when packaging that citra build was too potent so they messed something i never bothered to look into. Nice Alita pfp btw

Actually DXVK is not linux based, it was just made for linux use. What it does is translate directx code to vulkan instructions. Then the windows users noticed it was faster than having the game run on directx lmao.
