Helloooo gamers,

As I watch DBZ for the first time, I look for games and am baffled by the number of console and handheld releases for this IP (not complaining!). I’ve played some older ones since I was early in the series at the time, and I gotta say I wasn’t impressed with the difficult-to-understand SNES card games and such. I also played through some of Dragon Ball: Advanced Adventure and that was pretty cute. I avoided a lot else so I wouldn’t get too spoiled on the events of the story.

I just finished the Cell saga and was wondering which games I can play without spoiling too much, and which you recommend. I know it’s funny to worry about getting spoiled on such an old and well-loved series, and there *is a lot I already know, but I’d like save those big, heavy-hitting story moments and reveals for watching the show :- )

Which entries did you think stood out? Which should I avoid? Any funny hacks or homebrews you’ve seen?

I absolutely recommend Dragon ball AF it’s one of my favorite romhacks of all time it’s a romhack of Dragon Ball Budokai 3 changes a lot of the songs and aesthetics really nice.

How about you try DBZ Shin Budokai for the PSP it’s based on an OVA and if you watched some of them you can see that it’s almost non canon.
Seconding this. Loved these games on psp! They’ve got cool mods too. Tag team tenkaichi is also open world.

I recommend the Attack Of The Saiyans for the DS, a RPG Of the first arc of DBZ with a Lot Of charm, You should avoid DBZ Sagas, is kinda bad, a beat them up with horrible bosses that spam attacks and You can also spam kick and punch like for two minutes to win.

Awesome, thanks! I was hoping for more of an RPG experience

You might want to give the GBA Legacy of Goku games a try. The first one has a bunch of issues but the second one is pretty sweet. Other than that the PS2 fighting games are neat if you get bored of RPGs.

Buu fury might be what you’re looking for!

Ah I was too late

Have to wait until I pass that point in the anime ::hush But it’s on my list, someone else has actually recommended that to me as well
That’s fair hahaha

I recommend checking most of the PSP and GBA library, most of them are fighting games and one is 2D platformers style like Advanced Adventure (but that's not DBZ so)

And since you like RPG, the GBA have most of that. What I think you should avoid is definitely the likes of DBZ Taiketsu because…just don't

most dbz games are fighting ones. the xenoverse games have rpg stuff in them, but both cover stuff from super and a bit from gt.

the gba ones are primarily action rpgs. db heroes world mission is a crazy card collecting game. fun to play and about a thousand different characters and form to use with attacks being customizable.

and because of Toriyama doing the art style, you can pretty much recrate a bunch of dragon ball characters in several dragon quest/warriors games. so there's that to add to the list if you want to.

I have only played the very old ones, but what I liked the most was Dragon Ball Z: Buyū Retsuden (Mega Drive) and yes, it's a fighting game.
Honestly i never watched the anime, but this game was enjoyable even on its own.
It’s in Japanese, but there’s a french localization and an English fan translation for it too.
But whether there's spoiler or not, is something that more knowledgeable people should say! ?

Deebo did said something about Buu's arc, most of these games included either Buu as a character or a plot about him so…yeah, it's a bit hard

Well the most known is Tenkaichi 3, but if you want a more complete story mode go play Tenkaichi 2. The what If in that games are very cool, for example there's one of what if Raditz loses his memory and becomes good. Another good ones are the Legacy of Goku games these are ARPG, they explain very well the plot of the sagas but the first one is very rough and takes some story liberties. DBZ attack of the saiyans for the DS is pretty good and it focus only in the Saiyan saga it was made by Monolith Soft. And if you want to play something out of this world play DB AF a game that has a awesome OST. Check this out
Also to finish. The Famicom games are very cool you have Dragon Ball Z: Kyōshū! Saiyajin it's a rpg with a card system and in total they are three games. The fjrst begins in the Saiyan saga and the third part ends in the Cell saga at the battle of Piccolo against Cell first form.

That reminds me

Another great romhack is “anime war”. It’s a romhack of budokai tenkaichi 3, tons of skin mods, some music mods, different menu and is completely in Spanish (including menu narration)
I have it on pcsx2. It’s fantastic.

- Dragon Ball Attacks of the Sayans : turn based RPG

- Legacy of Goku 2 and 3 (Buu's Fury) : action RPG.

- Dragon Ball Budokai : Fighting game 2D style, pretty accessible. Would recommende the 3rd game.

- Dragon Ball Budokai Tenkaichi : Arena Fighter, pretty accessible too.

- Super Dragon Ball Z : 3D fighter, has a lot of depth and probably the better game for fighting games enthusiasts, but not a lot of solo content.

- Dragon Ball Supersonic Warriors : Figthing game where you fly freely (kinda like psychic force), easy to pick up, super dynamic, one of the best Dragon Ball Games ever made. The first game on GBA is the better one in my opinion.

- Dragon Ball Origins 1 & 2 : stylus only, adventure games that are pretty good.

I appreciate the breakdown and I’ll be sure to check these out! Thanks bestie!

I highly recommend the Tenkaichi 4 hack for Tenkaichi 3, it has three dubs spanish/english/japanese, has lots of fighters and they have recently unlocked development tools so now they can fully go crazy with the game engine.

Seconding this. Spanish dub is fantastic.

DBZ Super Butouden 2 on the SNES. It covers the Cell saga when he became Perfect to the end. 3 covers Majin Buu saga, but no storyline.

IIRC Super Butoden 2 never got realeased in the US (meaning no 60 HZ if you don't read japanese) but I think I've seen a hack on CDR which allows 60 HZ.

If that's the case, yeah, highly recommend this game just for the story mode because it changes depending on the victory / defeats and some choices.
It was super fun trying out all the routes.

However I highly recommend looking for a guide to play this game because there is no in game tutorial and it's not a game that you can figure out how to play by experimenting.
