Thread for discussion of the dragon ball z Budokai and Tenkaichi series
I personally think Tenkaichi 3 is way better than sparking zero
Its also my favorite game of all time
I used to look down on Budokai 3 after playing Tenkaichi 3 but I've learned to appreciate it recently

Oh also I should say, I sold my childhood copy of Tenkaichi 3, box, manual and all for like $50. Not realizing it's worth like $200

i wish i still had the poster that came with my copy of budokai 1. it had the cover on one side and all the character's on the other.

Weirdly enough, as much as I love the Budokai Tenkaichi saga, I never really got into Budokai 3 or any of the other 2D DBZ games. I really wanted to give them another try, but ever since Team BT4 released Budokai Tenkaichi 4, it's become my favorite way to scratch that DBZ itch.

In my opinion Tenkaichi 3 is the best one for gameplay, combos and available characters. However, story mode is lacking the exploring/RPG factor Budokai 3 had, which made it quite funny. Still, my favourite one is Tenkaichi 2, which took the RPG mode from Budokai 3, made it better and fused it with and improved Tenkaichi 1 gameplay. Back in the days, I played a lot of Tenkaichi 2, more than Tenkaichi 3. I also remember that they came out one year after the previous one, so when Tenkaichi 3 came out, I had quite enough of DBZ... that's when I moved to Naruto with Narutimate Accel series

i never did quite see the appeal of the sparking video games
the characters moved and played very similarly to one another to the point where it felt like the rosters were much smaller than they actually were
i believe most of the characters shared the same inputs as well
so it became very dull to me very quickly

Has anyone played the BT4 mod?

The RPG factor in Budokai 3 and Tenkaichi 2 made both of them my favourites one. If I had to choose one, it would be Budokai 3. As a kid, it was so cool to be able to play with Goku Super Saiyan 4.

Sadly, I never had a PS2 and currently can't emulate one, so my only approach to the Budokai and Tenkaichi series were Shin Budokai 1 and 2, and Tenkaichi Tag Team on the PSP(rest in peace, buddy).

I really love all three, especially the way the Story Mode was handled. Both Shin Budokai games have their own original stories, rather than retelling the same things we already know so much. I liked the second Shin Budokai better because it focused on helping Trunks against the revived villains that are destroying the cities in the future, and you get to play as Future Gohan as well (is the same thing as Adult Gohan, but the "essence" is better).

On the other hand, Tenkaichi Tag Team did retell the events of DBZ, but had a bunch of subquests regarding the lore of the series, and some "what if" with characters like Bardock, who arrives to Earth a few moments before Raditz and has to join forces with Piccolo in order to rescue Gohan, or when Goku and Vegeta fused into Gogeta instead of Vegito against Super Buu (it's a shame that Janemba was not in this game).

It's only $12 on eBay :3

If you want to punish yourself on DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi use the most pathetic character Hercule. Believe the dude’s can’t really do a lot of damage.

he can do damage. you just gotta spam his ultimate

I like them both, Budokai Tenkaichi 3/4 and Sparking Zero, but I enjoyed more BT3 because I can actually do some combos in that one. I always feel that even if I land a hit in SZ, it will eventually become a contest of "pssh...nothin personnel...kid...", meanwhile, I must be careful of not throwing a "countereable" move in BT3 and even more in BT4, even if it's something that I will end up doing anyways because every combo requires it.

Yes, I also think that Budokai Tenkaichi 3 is still undefeated!

I wish though that we had a new Budokai Tenkaichi that introduced a big technical leap and new/original game mechanics. Sparking Zero doesn't really bring anything new to the table in my opinion.

Recently started looking into the speedruns for Budokai 1. Absolutely insane what the top runners have managed in that game.
I remember rage quitting so hard as a kid I ripped it out of my ps2 and started punching the disk!::lol
Pretty sure it still works to this day.

The Budokai/Tenkaichi games were a large part of my childhood. The OST of both series still stick with me today - Lost Courage from BT2 and Challengers from Budokai 1 (Aka "not Statovarious' Hunting High and Low") are some that stand out in particular. At least Kenji Yamamoto had good taste in music!

Budokai 1 was one of my first Gamecube games, and it still holds up pretty well, all things considered.

I haven't yet played Sparking Zero, but will likely check it out very soon.

You as well, it seems! I've also been taking a look at the speedruns as it was recommended to me on YouTube a week or so ago. I was pleasantly surprised to see what goes into a B1 run! The run seems very brutal, no doubt!

tenkaichi 2 for story, tenkaichi 3 for gameplay ::agree
I hear people praise Tenkaichi 2 SO MUCH for the story
I went straight from Tenkaichi 1 to Tenkaichi 3 as a kid
I've played 2 before but it was long ago and it was the Wii version
I might roll through the story with retro achievements on
