Day-One Purchases?

I am not leaving my house for it, but I am anxiously awaiting splatoon raiders to ship to my front porch on day one. I have made it to a couple pokemon release days and MHST 3, but i'm not driving yet so it's pretty difficult for me lol
I mentioned my prized possession Doom 2016 Collector's. But I would never get something like that shipped again. My dumb caveman ass accidentally ripped the box of the game trying to get the box it shipped in open. That hoe was SEALED.

flashing back to the time I had puyo puyo tetris 2s shipped and it blew off my porch because of a wind storm while I was at work and my landlord found it two blocks away. the box is cracked from all the bumping and it haunts me but i cannot learn 🥲🥲 i like my magically appearing treats

Dude, I wish I saved it when I was in the AYN discord. But some guy ordered a Thor, and when the YunExpress driver came to his porch, he shot that bitch like Kobe in the NBA Finals. Homie opened the box and both screens were spider webbed and the screen came off the hinge. I laughed at the video of the driver throwing the box, but I was heartbroken seeing the aftermath. Actual emotional rollercoaster. Shit had me thinking about becoming a monk I was so depressed.

Post automatically merged:

queued up for GTA V at around 10:30 pm back in 2013 outside game stop - staff handed out lollipops to many people in waiting in line.

Man, I really need to get that. Been meaning to but, you know, my eyes are set on slop. You're goddamn right I'm buying Gears E-Day over Deltarune and living with the loss.

E-Day's the most I've been excited for Gears in a long time. Hopefully The Collective delivers. 4 and 5 were competent games, they looked amazing, but something was missing for me. I think it's because The Locust went from menacing in the OG trilogy to more cartoonish, and the robots weren't fun or interesting to fight.

Used to do it all the time in the 360/Wii/DS era. Our local GameStop would turn into a halfway block party every time. Even made some acquaintances from familiar faces I saw over and over (small town). Series like Pokemon, Assassins Creed and a handful of others would have me and my brother saving up, and him driving us down to the midnight release.

I can't quite remember the last time I did it, but I do miss it. Now the only game-related thing people queue for is pokemon cards, and thats just to feed their gambling addiction, which is sad on multiple levels.

I'm not that kind of gamer. In most cases, I wait till prices went down rather than "navigate the seven seas". What's more, it's going that way, because I play newer games on console due to my PC being toaster type.

Back in the day I could absolutely understand buying a game on day one, but I would never do it nowadays. Even for a game that I wanted that badly, it's common and expected for games these days to be released as an abortion and the developers have to spend the next several months scraping together the afterbirth before the game is actually finished.

For any game that came out during a generation where consoles were expected to be connected to the internet (like Xbox 360 and newer; before that an internet connection on a console was sometimes an option but it was still common that people would never actually connect their console to the internet) I wait until they're done patching it before I give the game my time. Plus, that way I can get the final version for a deep discount rather than essentially paying full price to be an unpaid beta tester.

Not sure if I am getting all of them

Nintendo 64 w/Super Mario 64 (Actually got it the day before release bc I worked at the toy store)
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy Tactics
Saga Frontier
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IX
Lunar Silver Star Story Complete
Lunar Eternal Blue Complete
Alundra
Arc the Lad Collection
GTA - Vice City
Final Fantasy XII (the Collectors edition with the Strat guide/Art book)
Silent Hill 4
GTA - San Andreas
World of Warcraft - Burning Crusade
Dragon Quest VII (3DS)
Alan Wake 2

I had a pre-order for GTAIV (came with a duffel bag and some other stuff) but my mind had a utilitarian turn regarding the extras and I canceled that and one or two others. Outside of a few more I bowed out of the preorder game. Ironically that was around the time I started going all hardcore on PC, which was due to the now legendary early 2010 Humble Indie Bundles.

A few times, like with OneShot on Switch or Animal Crossing. The first time I ever got a game day 1 was when Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts came out, I played it all night.

I really hope it's good. I'm not delusional and think it's gonna save the franchise, or god forbid Xbox, but I think it'll be a fun 3 month distraction. Excited for the story the most I'll be honest.

I'm excited to see how it all went down. When Gears started, everything already had that "Destroyed Beauty" look, you didn't get to see what life was like before. It reminds me of the hype around Halo Reach. While that's not one of my favorite Halo games, I did enjoy it. I just hated the motion blur the game had. Thankfully, they removed it from MCC.

There have been a fair number over the years, but there are two in particular that always stand out to me:

rosenkreuzstilette freudenstachel and Paper Mario: Sticker Star

I was in college when Rosenkreuzstilette 2 dropped, and the original is my favorite Mega Man fan game to date, so of course I was hyped to all hell to buy it. I never had any disposable income growing up, but I did with my college job, so I was counting down for that to drop, even though it would be a digital only purchase from the publisher’s web store and I was very weary of online purchases. But the day came, and I went to the site, and … I couldn’t buy it? My card kept declining and I eventually gave up, quite sad. Then I went to buy food later and my card wouldn’t work there either, and I started freaking out because I thought I had put my card info into a fake site and my card got hacked or something. Called the bank, turns out buying things in Japan when you live in the USA trips their fraud prevention system and my card got locked. I was able to work through the unlock process with the support person and approve foreign purchases for that day, and I downloaded the game and ordered Chinese takeout.

And it was amazing. 😎

For Sticker Star, I absolutely adore Paper Mario 1 and 2, easily two of my favorite RPGs of all time. Super Paper Mario I got a good bit after it came out when I finally got a Wii, and it is … you know what, it’s good, the comedy was on point and outside of navigating the town to find each new chapter it was fun, but it wasn’t what I was after.

THEN the previews started dropping for Paper Mario 4, and it was going to be a return to form. I was beyond excited. As in, I was saving up to buy a 3DS alongside Sticker Star when it released excited. It was coming out, like, right after freudenstachel, so it was a ton of saving I was doing, but this was going to be amazing. Then the day came, I was there when electronics opened at my local store, I got both, and I went home, and holy hell, Paper Mario: Sticker Star

Fucking

Sucks.

It is one of the absolutely worst designed RPGs I have ever played, and I have sat through the dumpster fire that was Shadow Madness, I have drug myself through the pure tedium of Dragon Quest 2, I have bashed my head against a wall trying to enjoy Unlimited SaGa — nothing matches the disappointment of that first week with this game. I tried. So hard.

And I remember being so confused, because the product delivered was NOTHING like those first preview images. It was only later I found out golden boy himself, Miyamoto, was responsible, basically coming in mid development and complaining that people didn’t want another game like Paper Mario 2 and that they had to change it up and make it different.

Because, kids, remember, repeat after me: If you buy a Paper Mario game, you don’t want a Paper Mario game.

Which reminds me, know what also dropped in 2012? X-Com remake by Firaxis. Yeah. Bet your sweet ass I day one bought that too. And you know what else? Quite possibly the greatest video game remake of all time. It’s like someone developed an X-Com game because they felt people MAY WANT TO PLAY AN X-COM GAME.

Some resentment may remain.
