Relic finally remastered the, imo, best RTS of all time: Dawn of War, putting all expansion packs together and updating the game to 64-bits (which will help A LOT for the modding community that has been struggling with the ram usage).

But now that I have give it a spin for a couple of hours I have to say that is not only incredibly fun, but also a great game to spent some time with friends. Now that everyone is on the same game (previously some played one of the 2 last expansions, either Dark Crusade or Soul Storm) there is no split in the population and thank to good QoL improvements like bigger FOV, the online scene is incredible.

And for everyone that havent heard about this game, Dawn of War is an RTS created by Relic (Company of Heroes, in fact is really similar) which has a incredible presentation with great effects and animations. The game is heavily designed to get you into the action, so it is way more similar to StarCraft than Age of Empires.

For anyone that loves RTS, I highly recommend give this one try.

Oh the remaster actually includes all of the original games expansions. That's neat.
Especially as It feels like the only Soulstorm apologist left in the world.
I liked the bolted on Risk/Planetary conquest map.

But I vividly remember Dawn of War 3.
Then there was Company of heroes 3.

No sell. Relic Entertainment has to do more than a stop gap remaster to regain my trust.
Especially after Total War Warhammer raised the bar beyond the stratosphere.
Dawn of War may have once held the title of best video game representation of the tabletop experience.
It does not hold such prestige now.

I just got my hands on this the other day and have to admit I'm having a blast.

Its not much of a shock considering how insanely popular this game is, but I deffo feel like this remaster is going to help a bunch of new people discover the franchise.

Personally, I'd like to see them do something similar with the older Warcraft titles like 1/2 but considering how shitty 3 remastered was maybe I shouldn't be wishing for it.

FOR THE EMPEROR!
It is better to die for the Emperor, that live for yourself

Yeah... I still look at the DoW 3 trailer from time to time and remember how great it is (the trailer) and how hyped I was. I HOPE, this sells well to just make them realize you can just... make DoW 1 but in a engine that was make this decade, slash a 4 on it and call it day.

However, after BF6 now Im doubtful about game companies capabilities to realize how to do something good. They will always try to tweak things so they can get "a broader audience" and fuck everything up...

But I totally understand you.

Yeah, Im sure this surely have something to do with the success of Space Marine 2. We have been asking for a proper remaster for years (specially in the modding community), so this might not be a coincidence.

I hope it catches on, I know RTS are not a massive genre but I do hope more people are willing to give the REAL DoW a try.

YEES YEEES YEEEEES this is exactly what I have been dreaming about. A remaster that leaves the good parts of the game completely fucking alone, and upgrades the engine to 64 bit so it doesn't cough up and die trying to play modded. They've fixed the camera, render distance, unit pathfinding... and have been working with the modders to make sure the mods CAN work on the new release.

I bought it the instant it was available, because Relic finally pulled their head out of their ass and delivered something people actually want to play. The original game is amazing and now more people will have the chance to play it properly on modern systems. And it was cheap too!

I'm just waiting on the first couple weeks of patches on the game, and patches on the Unification Mod to come out. The game can already load the assets from the mod, but some parts of it are broken until fixes from both ends arrive. But it will be glorious!

LoL This was certainly coordinated with the DoW 4 annoucement. Hopefully this time is good

Once the dev team release the mod its going to become probably the best RTS of 40k for a while. From what I have heard they are working on it but so far it is not compatible.

Seeing Dawn of War get love after the release of DoW 3 is crazy to me. I was almost certain it just offed the series right then and there, but alas, here's to hoping DoW 4 won't be a waste of time and money. Seeing the direction RTS has taken as a whole in recent years though, I don't really have my hopes up.
On the other hand, is the definitive edition really worth grabbing if I already have the originals on steam? It looks more like a "re-release" than a "remaster" to me, plus a lot of the features it touts will be of no use to me. Just doesn't seem worth it.

saw the IGN logo and threw up a bit. I would say why should I pay 20 euro to get a facelift "well im super broke" But still just download Ultimate Apocalypse and your good.

It's more for people who never played the originals I think, as yeah the changes aren't anything overly much over the originals. A bigger field of view is I think about the only really big change, the gameplay is the exact same. I guess having a presumably bigger multiplayer community would be a bonus for the definitive edition too. I'm just glad for another excuse to play through some Soulstorm campaigns.

if you only play singleplayer and without mods, yeah there's not much (if anything) new here, but otherwise this is a great remaster. it fixes the biggest issues with the old game while keeping the gameplay intact! Like I said on the other post, being able to play modded multiplayer without fear of out-of-memory crashes is huge.

out-of-memory crashes
That's very true, I forgot about that change actually. Makes it kinda worthwhile even if you have the originals.

Now that we're all here, let's talk about why the Eldar are the best, because they're the best.

One thing I realized yesterday and didn't see anyone talking about, now with the reveal of Dawn of War IV.

It feels a bit like Relic pushed this one out of the door a bit rushed, since they're stil working on fixing the last details on the game with patches. But now that the annoucement for a new game came out, it makes sense: they were trying to get DE ready before Gamescom! It's perfectly understandable they didn't want to have their thunder stolen, and releasing this after the announcement of a new game would definitely have impacted sales and attention they got. Older fans of the game like me would still buy it, but new players who weren't aware of the series would probably end up waiting for the new one instead.
Anyway I'm glad we get to have two new releases in this franchise I thought was completely dead after the failure of DoW3.

The Eldar? Do I spot a xenos sympathizer in our midst? Of the wrong xenos, even! We all know the Necrons are the best, and the rightful owners of this Galaxy! ::smirk1

FR tho, in the base game my mains are Necrons, Chaos Marines and Sisters of Battle. In Unification, I play Salamanders, Emperor's Children, the three base game factions too, and a few others. There are so many armies in that mod, I love it.

My love for the silly space not-elves will never falter, and it's entirely because I thought they were really cool looking when I was 8 and first getting into 40K, and I'm very stubborn. I wish Striking Scorpions were in the games though, those guys were one of my favourite tabletop units; at least there's the Warp Spiders and Reapers. I do also play the Tau and Guard as well.
