Considering events surrounding the fall of Oolacile, I can't shake feeling that Manus was at some point the being who shared his soul with everyone, but I can't find any source confirming this (P.S: I only played DS1).

No he isn't Pygmy. Pygmy is a completely different person, and Manus is something entirely different. Manus was a primordial human and was some old sorcerer that went crazy, since his soul was just extraordinarily different from other primordial's it created the abyss. Dark Souls can create worlds as seen in the DLC. Gwynn feared this and enslaved/depowered humans cause he was afraid of the dark souls of man.

Thanks. For these and other reasons, I always choose not to light kiln in the end.

Dark Souls is a great game!

No I dont think Manus is THE furtive pygmy from the opening cutscene. But I think he's probably closely tied to the pygmy and he probably had a large fragment of the Dark Soul.
The thing is, its really up to you. Dark Souls (the whole series) leaves a lot of things somewhat ambiguous and open to interpretation.

The Black Serpent explains a lot of the things they don't want the Chosen One to learn. I recommend the DLC if you haven't done it yet. Also play 3 since it concludes and explains a LOT more about the series. DS2 expands on the world building.

I thought DS2 was a wasted load of bullshit.
