My favorite DDR was Max 2 and Extreme the Japanese version.

My sibling and I played a ton of Extreme and MAX back in the day. I've played a good chunk of the other PS2 titles, but I think the nostalgia I have for Ex and MAX make it too hard for anything else to beat.

4th Mix was when the series really started feeling modern and established. The Maniac difficulty is no longer locked behind SSR mode, there were many new and returning songs to choose from by then, and the character designs looked more refined.

DDR Max was another turning point from the series, making the jump from PS1 to PS2 specs. However, it had a limited song list. DDR Extreme is an improvement of it and had more song variety by then.

I prefer the feel of the Supernova releases (futuristic) over the X series (Dance Central-ish). I also can't stand the announcer in the latter series.
