Square's early history and the PC-88/98 catalog are both topics that fascinate me. Thanks to Basement Brothers, I was able to get acquainted with the first RPG Square released, even before Final Fantasy. It was called Cruise Chaser Blassty and it was released on the PC-88. CCB was intended to be a collaboration between Square and the Anime Studio "Sunrise", the creators of the Gundam series. They had planned to release an anime in conjunction with the game but those plans fell through. In any case, it is interesting to see these early Square games and how some of the ideas inspired future franchises such as Front Mission.

Edit: Oh yeah, Nobuo Uematsu worked on some synthesizer arrangements for CCB's soundtrack album. It was his first job with Square.

If you are curious to see what the game is like, Basement Brothers released a walkthrough of CCB.
