Built on top of Ferraro's translation of the Japanese version of Contra.

I can't speak for others but personally speaking I feel this concept clashes with "play as X character hack" as the idea in most cases isn't so much "play a gender swap".

Take for example the Roll-chan series, it started off with one of the dozens of official ports of Mega Man 1 which adds Roll as a playable character, that version afaik is lost media now but the hack series lives on, Capcom did this with Magical Kingdom for the GBA as well, adding Minnie as a playable character.

Hacks such as "Tyris in Golden Axe Master System" or "Amy Rose in Sonic 2" or "Super Peach Bros" etc imo are not so much "transform the men into women" as much as "play X game as Y character" no different than "Mega Man X playable Zero".

Not sure how it clashes. You can have both.

But also, those are gender swaps, even if you don't see them that way. For most people who grew up loving these games, but don't identify as male, it's awesome to get to play them as a female character. Straight gender swaps do that directly. But playing as Amy in Sonic or Roll in Mega Man is getting to play those games with female leads. It satisfies the same itch. I get that's not the itch you're trying to scratch, yours is just playing with new characters, but there are a lot of people out there who are looking for the female lead angle. Playing as Peach or Zelda instead of Mario or Link is accomplishing the same thing.

Basically, the thing you described as "not being genderswaps" is exactly the kind of thing we genderswap fans want. I'm fine if we wanna delineate genderswap and characterswap, as long as they're both included under the "getting to play as a different gender" umbrella.

Edited to add: I'm talking about female characters because that's what I'm looking for. But gender/characterswapping female leads to male leads is valid as well.

Would it be possible to get "gender swap" as a tag up in the menu, like undubs? I know there was a Ghouls & Ghosts one a little bit ago, and I'd love to see what all is on here, but they don't all use the term "gender swap" so searching can be a little tricky.

There may not be enough of them to warrant it, which is totally understandable. Just thought I'd ask. :)

No need to worry about that. People reject "gender swaps" when the original creators do it to retcon the source material and gaslight fans as being bigots for not liking it. Fan hacks and fan projects and fan art is pretty much accepted online.
