I'll never forget the time my sister finally got "¿Quien Es El Culpable?" (knockoff "Clue"), a game she had been asking for for years at that point, my parents always turning her down because the all-too-real fear that we would lose the many small pieces that came within the box, rendering the whole thing unplayable in record time.
It was the same reason they had used to veto our wanting of "Life" and "Monopoly", too, but they either got tired of arguing with her or just deemed her 11-year-old-self mature enough to handle it, because the box did show up under our tree during Christmas, 1998.
I remember her positively squealing the second she saw the still-wrapped package at the foot of our plastic tree and tearing into it before we could even overcome our shared joy, setting up the board without more than glancing at the instructions in passing, like a couple of tools.
That was actually the running theme in our household: we would grab games, do something fun with them, and only then look at the rules and instructions.
We played quite a few games during those first few weeks, but then the game got forgotten about and the pieces ended up disappearing one by one until there was nothing left to play it with... But it didn't even matter because we were starting to grow into our tweenage era and fun was only found elsewhere from then on.
Many years later, I found the board again... At the back of a family painting hauled all the way from the old world and in deep need of a restoration -- it turned out that our grandpa, always the practical one, had used it to secure the frame, figuring it wasn't needed anymore.
Still... For a few short, sweet weeks shouting stuff like "FUE VIOLETA, CON LA PISTOLA, EN EL COMEDOR!" was the battlecry of childhood.
What about you? Ever played Clue or a variant of it? Any fun memories to share?
