Chess

ah yes i remember when i splashed out on a flash marble chess set and then got beaten consecutively by two of my friends who are both low iq imbeciles. its been in storage since.

Well in Chinese we say "输棋者输人生" that means "those who lose at chess will lose at life" so my dude trying to figure out "sure win" way so he won't fail in life lolol... I actually lied, there is no such idiom lol.

*me escape before me is beaten*

Haven't played chess for over 20 years, so I'd not rate myself at all these days, but the lad that taught me chess told me how his brother had taught him chess and told him " You never end up beating the person who teaches you how to play". He never beat his brother after being told that. He said the same thing to me and, eventually, when I got the hang of it I was beating him more than he was beating me. He was grand about it but I could always see him looking a bit baffled about how something so strongly imprinted into his mind didn't turn out to be true. He was a good lad, no freaking or anything. It's just funny how something you are led to believe can have such a strong imprint.
Regarding chess, itself. I loved it at the time but it can get too intense. If two people are really into it and want to win, it can take a few hours and the intesity isn't healthy, especially when one loses. Great game but awkward at the finish, when so much energy has been put into it.

I don't know if this is a serious thread, maybe it derailed into utter silliness, but I'm not familiar enough with the game to comment on it. I've always been curious about the game, though.
Absolutely not.

I should've done it earlier but I wasn't sure if the tabletop forum was actually about any physical game or just TGCs like MTG or Strategy board games like Warhammer/WH40K.

I am pretty bad at chess because I get overwhelmed fast by many strategic outcomes but there are small rules to help (but aren't set in stone so masters could even break them).

Just watched that video and it reminded me how amazing the game actually is. Brought back those forward thinking manouvers. You really had to try to be many steps ahead of your opponent. If you could find opponents that were chilled out and levelheaded, all the better.

Favourite opening? Has to be the bongcloud, always beat my friend with it, who I would estimate would be rated like low 1000 elo. What's funny about playing the opening against him is that it came to the point where every time I played that opening, he would lose. Good times.

Not to say that Chess > Video Games but I can hardly see actual videogames with almost as many possibilities as this one (aside from Tetris).

In a way Tetris is the Chess of video games: both very ancient, still being actively played even to this day, has new editions even today (like Mario Bros themed Chess like how you have Tetris with other themes) and has an almost infinite amount of combinations for the patterns.

Chess isn't better than all the videogames combined but it is definitely superior to Tetris by a country mile. Tetris is an excellent game, taking nothing away from it. If you want to speed up chess you just add a timer both sides. The depth that chess goes is way deeper than the depth that Tetris goes.

@Naltic : Best not to give away your opening moves, unless bluffing.

I’d say queen’s gambit, even if it’s somewhat predictable.
