Changing taste with age

i went from playing action games to playing rpgs too.
i imagine in the future i'll be able to play card deck games without vomiting. maybe i'll even get into visual novels! or rts games!

If you only play old games, it's clearly a nostalgia thing, I can't for the life of me see how anyone would not enjoy at least one of the top five games of 2024.
What were they? I haven't kept up

If I had to guess the consensus, it would be something like Astro Bot, Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth, Balatro, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, and Metaphor: ReFantazio.

I'd be in for Like a Dragon and maybe FF7, but maybe the others would surprise me?

Nope. I discover new old games to play on a regular basis that I never even heard of when I was younger. Of course I have games I'm nostalgic for but I only re-vist those occasionally. I just prefer the style and gameplay of older games, simple as.

Like with food it changes.

But in the meantime I think it's a bit too bad to have people forcing themselves to do stuff because they're adult or stop playing some game because "they are too old for that."

I'm sorry but I don't follow you, are we obligated to appreciate a game from the current year?

Also playing retro games I haven't played until now isn't out of nostalgia.

I can't say the same thing is happening to me. At one point a decade ago collection took over as my main focus but I stopped that cold turkey and sold 98% of my collection to return to the primary reason of my passion; playing and completing video games! That being said music, books are still in rotation but films have taken back seat in recent years.

I don't play video games for stories instead I prefer the challenge first. It helps that some of my least favorite genres are Adventure, Action-Adventure, Open-World /Sandbox, FPS, and modern Hack 'n slash Action-RPGs.

RPGs in general were always time consuming, even playing them as a kid. I would seldom complete them, and majority were abandoned leaving save states on my memory cards. These days I prioritize finishing (1) RPG before moving on to a second, or third one- no matter how long it takes to complete it.

The modern games you mentioned are part of the reason why I prefer old games they don't hold your hand and force you to get the knack of it. It's going great, I keep track of my progress over at HowLongToBeat. I've been playing all sorts of 'new' old games that were recently translated, or on systems I missed out playing back in the day, or unknown discoveries for example.

Roguelikes/ Roguelites are something I developed a taste for as I got older due to time constraints and love just taking over. It's kind of like a board gaming session, in that you always start from fresh (albeit possibly with some perks you've earned) and when your run is over it's over. Short sessions normally, engaging, challenging and can be very rewarding.

If you want challenging action games try any fromsoft game, I'd recommend Sekiro or Bloodborne.

Megaman Zero (1-4) was pretty hard too, and they're just really good games.
