Castlevania Megathread

I am not excited about it. I bet it will be serviceable and I'll buy it but not for $50 unless it's got literal goobers of overflowing content. Happy konami is jumping back in but they got a lot to prove

but they got a lot to prove
They already did with the new Contra, two Silent Hill games, and Haunted Castle Revisited.

Castlevania wasn't dead anyway, just got renamed to Bloodstained.
Bloodstained did nothing for me. Nodding, it even the 8 bit Curse of the Moon spinoffs that are more like the Classicvania games. Funny enough, Gal Guardians: Demon Purge gave me what I wanted in terms of Classicvania, and the game itself is basically Curse of the Moon 3 in terms of gameplay. The sequel to this game is more of a standard metroidvania, so i've avoided it.

doesn't look any different from these hundred of metroidvania indies.
Good thing I avoided a majority of those and have no interests.

Also I hope it won't be a Roguelite.
It's not. Also, don't be hating on the 2.5D. Let's all just be happy, it's an original title this time. My girl Sonia is back and considered canon again. Though she was always canon in my eyes.

Kinda makes me think of the Shinobi revitalization recently, as well as the obvious success of various indie MetroiVania over the last decade.

"Everything old is new again" they say, and legacy sequels to capitalize on the nostalgia cycle of mid to late 30s consumers are hot right now.
Either way, it's at least good to see they haven't completely relegated this property to pachislop.

I wasn't part of whatever conversation was going on up there but I can easily say it's not a 'good thing' you've missed a lot of great games.

Not exactly what I hoped for a modern entry

Some of that was partial sarcasm, but it should be known I don't care for a majority of metroidvania games. Aside from a few exceptions, and even those exceptions aren't exactly the best of the best that I enjoyed.

I think its okay ...
Nothing more or less but just .... okay .

I thought they would finally make a new 3D Castlevania but its another 2D Metroidvania that seems to be meh overall .
While the 2D Metroidvania games of the IP are the best of the best , im lately burned out from the Metroidvania genre overall and expected , with the Castlevania Ressurection leak last year , that they eventually try again the Castlevania 64 route but beefed up and improved because more and more people became very positive towards the games .

Maybe its just me with that opinion .

I getcha. I'm actually one of those old fuddies that doesn't like Metroid in my Castlevania so I get it.

They should actually have hired the Bloodstained staff for this!

Part of the reason why I didn't play a majority of them. I wanted to avoid burnout in case this day, would come and it did.
Yeah , i think the oversaturation pushes it somehow . Especially when we got tons of castlevania inspired metroidvanias that either pushes the genre or compliments the style and design of those original older games .

I wouldnt even mind a Castlevania Dungeoncrawler if im being honest . ::eggmanlaugh

I don't have something in particular in mind, just not a generic Metroidvania that looks like Dead Cells with a mustache. So many possibilities: capitalizing on the Netflix show maybe, something more gothic because a lot of people loved this maybe, something darker and more ambitious in the vein of FromSoftware maybe.

The teaser does not hit any string: artistic direction or music, for example, are totally unappealing.

And I have played HCR day one, but it's an arcade game that's 40 min long. At some point I need something else, something new and something with more ambition too.

Also I don't think Sonia is the MC. She should be older that Trevor Belmont but maybe the devs did not rely on the timeline?

"What you've just seen is the reveal trailer for Castlevania: Belmont's Curse, the first title celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Castlevania series."

I wonder what the second title will be...

As much as I love the Netflix series, I think Nocturne ended on a good note. It doesn't need another season.

Give my boy Soma a show next.

Satisfying, but kinda painful, especially the backtracking. Game made me definitely felt dumb in some parts and definitely overplayed where I could just say "nah, no need to stress over". But instead I even fought the Forgotten One (almost for nothing tbh. It was definitely much harder than Death that I've beat it first try). Ugh.

Ahh yes ! Lament of innocence !
Its a great game but it is a huge one too . And by huge , i mean waaaaay too much space that your travel from Point A to Point B .

Im a defender of the badass belmont strut but i despise a little the belmont jog . It would be great if the running speed would be drasticly increased but Curse of Darkness inherented this flaw too but there are ways to overcome that flaw ( not constantly but atleast something ) .

And i dhould playthrough Lament of Innocence again because i missed out alot of stuff in my first playthrough .

They're busy making Bloodstained 2, remember?

Also, when people say that the character is indeed Sonia Belmont
It says the successor of Trevor Belmont, and that it takes place 23 years after CV3
So most likely it's like Trevor's child or something, and who knows, maybe they could retcon Sonia to be Trevor's daughter instead of (allegedly) his mother.

Lastly, the Castlevania metroidvania games are different from every other for the simple thing of having an RPG system (ie: leveling up, armor and sometimes weapon equipment)
So seeing one that looks like it's just going to be a regular Metroidvania...
I mean, it looks good. And if it's made by the Dead Cells team, we can only hope that it'll be fun and that it respects what the franchise is, just like Return to Castlevania did.

But at the end of the day, it doesn't matter if it's canon or not or whatever.
Just please let it be a good game.
