For those who like playing as Carrie, I made a recolor texture pack that gives her vivid colors that matches her concept art!

Instructions for the Rosalie's Mupen GUI (RMG) emulator. It has an interface very similar to Project 64 but with an up-to-date mupen64plus as the backend.

Instructions
  1. Download the texture pack attached in this post
  2. Get the Castlevania (U) (V1.0) [!] rom and open it
(the texture pack might work in other versions but the 60 fps code will not)
  3. Go to the hires_texture folder inside RMG folder
    In Windows, path is: %appdata%\RMG\Data\hires_texture
  4. Extract CASTLEVANIA.zip inside that folder. Should be in this format: hires_texture/CASTLEVANIA/[texture files]
  5. In the emulator, go to Settings -> Graphics -> Texture enhancement
  6. Mark "Use Texture Pack" and "Use Full Transparencies"

60 fps code

I got this one from the now defunct PJ64 forums.
  1. Go to System -> Cheats
  2. Click Add
  3. Enter a name (eg: 60 fps)
  4. Paste this in the code section: 800A10C2 000D
  5. Click Okay and close the cheat window
  6. Go to Settings -> Game -> Counter Factor -> Set to 1
  7. Close and re-open the emulator

During the mandragora & nitro quest, attacking the biker skeletons at the first room might crash your game. I recommend using save states there for safety.

Other tweaks

In Video tab inside Graphics settings, you can enable VSync, native resolution, antialiasing and texture filtering.

You made this? That's great man
It might seem like a small change but thank you for your contribution!

Thanks!
When you replay a game 14 times over the span of 2 years small stuff like this really makes a difference. I was tired of the main character's washed colors. I like colorful stuff ::blush

That's true, like the GBA palette stuff. I really love when the colors actually pop

I played and replayed Castlevania 64 a lot, back in the day and your update it's great reason to play it again! Great work, thanks!

This is fantastic! Nice job!

I can't seem to get the 60fps patch to work? I've tried downloading a U 1.0 version of the rom (from 3 different places) but nothing seems to work

Looks a lot better now! Nice work!!

Has anyone recording gameplay footage? I'd like to see this in video.

I forgot a very important step:

After opening Castlevania, go to:
Settings -> Game -> Counter Factor -> Set to 1
EDIT: Restart the emulator to apply the changes

Sorry for not doing proper testing beforehand ?

I can make one soonish

It's all good, no need to apologise

that being said its still not working for me lol ?

either my rom's are just incorrectly labeled or theres some random setting you or I have on or off that effects it

alternatively I could just be dumb and missing something

This was meant to be a streamlined casual run with a few moments of display of skill but it turned into an absolute disaster LMAO

  • My monitor randomly turned off at some point
  • The camera got stuck during the labyrinth phrase
  • While I didn't forgot the general structure of the maps I forgot A LOT of OBVIOUS placements... like my brain wasn't working. Seriously Malus just entered a door and I went the other way
  • I decided to use a controller I was NOT used to... I can't begin to tell how many times this fucked me over
  • I used PJ64 because the controller wasn't working property on RMG. The newest version ,ade thos weird sudden change to the shortcut keys and it confused me... remember that room I said the game could crash? I tried making a save state upon entering it, but instead I reseted the game
  • The game actually crashed later when I decided to not use a save state
  • It's pretty apparent the times when I become impatient :ROFLMAO:

The controller in question? Believe or not, the actual N64 controller ?
After months of procrastination I finally changed the buttons silicon and the joystick parts for this special occasion... looks brand new now (well it doesn't since I didn't clean it... will do that another day!) but sometimes the joystick takes just a liiittle longer to come back to center when let go... unnoticeable in probably every other game, but in Castlevania that has very unfortunate implications. The deadzone needed some work too.
By the way, I am used to the N64 controller, just not for Castlevania specifically ?

At least that made that dragon dracula suffering at the end all the more satisfying

I'll give this the proper attention tomorrow... thinking about just sending you the rom and the emulator files lol
Are you on Windows or Linux?

Thank you so much. That 60 FPS feels good.

The wide screen makes the camera feel less claustrophobic.

Seeing the full length of the beast boss was a satisfying moment. 1:45:25

The extra color on the leggings keeps the character standing out from the mostly brown and grey background.

Glad you liked it!

Can you believe I was rewatching that fight just as you posted?

You're right! :O

EDIT: It was in that very fight that I learned Carrie can throw axes really far ::eek

Discovered something new in the bull fight!

Turns out that by doing deliberate melee attacks on his back legs, his butt and his forehead you can put him in this absolute miserable yet terrifying state
