The last time it was a stealth adventure was in 2004 during the Mystery of the Stolen Drums but for its 40th anniversary. Carmen Sandiego is returning to its roots accessible detective work with a healthy dose of geography knowledge. For the first time the master thief Carmen is on the side of the good guys just like in Netflix's latest animated adaptation. The game also created the visual design which was flawlessly implemented and especially for the PS5 and is used in the entertaining the main story. In it you aim to stop the crooks from the VILE organization and visit various locations and countries where in short activities you uncover tidbits of local knowledge as well as clues as to who the culprit is and where he is. Depending on the situation a bit of point and click skill or wit is required and is entertaining enough for older fans while not overwhelming the younger generation. With clever methods you sort out the suspects and hopefully reach your goal in time because mistakes eat into the (usually generous) time reserve.

At the same time you explore an archive of old cases which despite being randomly generated are hardly less entertaining. They rely more on static retro visuals (like the classic home computer episodes) and omit the stealth and skill sections.

My Opinion

Of course you can tell that Carmen Sandiego is geared more towards younger audiences. But I can confidently say that even older players should have fun with it. The main story in particular is technically flawless and stylistically well staged and the various activities are easy to complete and remain varied and the puzzle aspect is neither too simple nor too challenging. The Retro-Style archive missions also ensure long term enjoyment.

Never played the original game and I haven't seen the cartoon. My only exposure to this franchise is from ProJared.

I never played a Carmen Sandiego video game before. Do you know why? It's because I never found one!!!

Is this still gonna ask me where Dusseldorf is or are we droppin' the edutainment angle?

I'm holding out for a deep sale on it, because I don't have a ton of faith in Gameloft in a non-mobile capacity. User reviews on steam seem really mixed and at $30 I just can't see it unless it was a slam dunk.

I remember an old cartoon series. But I didn't know there was also a game of it.
