I wanted to patch the original ISO myself since I think the EN patch uploaded to RHDN is slightly newer (August 2014) than the one included in the pre-patched version found here but for some reason the patching always fails, it says "data.bin not found inside the ISO"
If I select "touched/patched ISO" first then it'll go ahead and patch the ISO but it will have broken graphics during the intro and crash upon reaching the main menu on the latest stable PPSSPP. I've tried using the plugin loader version of the patch instead but it doesn't load no matter where I put it.

I know the patch was meant for the non-HD P3rd but somehow the most common pre-patched version you can find IS the HD one so someone must've figured out how to patch that version one way or another.

To successfully patch the Japanese ISO of Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD for PS3 with the English translation, you’ll need to follow a method that works around the limitations of the original patch, which was designed for the PSP version. The HD remaster contains a PSP ISO embedded within its file structure, so the key is to extract that PSP ISO, apply the patch to it, and then reinsert it into the HD package. First, use a tool like PS3 ISO Tools to extract the contents of the HD ISO and locate the PSP game data, usually found in the USRDIR folder. Once you’ve isolated the PSP ISO, open it with UMDGen and apply the Team Maverick English patch using its dedicated patcher. This step should succeed because the patcher is designed to recognize the PSP file structure, including the required data.bin. . After patching, save the modified ISO and replace the original PSP ISO inside the HD folder structure. Then, rebuild the entire HD ISO using PS3 ISO Tools or IRD Rebuilder to ensure it’s properly formatted for use on a modded PS3 or in RPCS3. When launched, the game should display English text and run without the graphical glitches or crashes that occur when patching the HD ISO directly. If this process proves too complex or unstable, an alternative is to use the patched PSP ISO in PPSSPP, which runs smoothly and supports the full translation, though it lacks the HD textures. This method has been used by fans to create the pre-patched HD versions circulating online, and while it requires multiple tools and steps, it’s currently the most reliable way to get the HD version running in English.

PS3 Iso Tools can't extract it since it's seemingly not an actual PS3 ISO. I played around with UMD Gen and even went as far as rebuilding the ISO to match Freedom Unite's structure but no dice.

Figured it out. Not only do you need the PS3-specific version of the English patch (only available on a dead but thankfully archived link) regardless of whether you have the actual PS3 ISO version or the UMD-ified ISO version found on the repo here but you still need to select "Touched/Patched" in the patcher itself.

How much more updated is it?
After looking at the bootup screen it's probably the same exact version that the pre-patched ones come with, I suspect that the RHDN page shows August 2014 as the last modified date just because whoever uploaded it added the savedata folder with the translated DLC quests inside the original zip. So I probably wasted my time lol.
Seems odd that the PSP version of the patch was archived and uploaded there but the PS3 one is only a dead (but archived, for once) pomf link.

Yeah, that checks out. The standard PSP patch doesn’t work on the HD version, so you do need the PS3-specific patch. That version was floating around on a now-archived link, and without it, patching the HD ISO directly usually fails or causes crashes. Also, selecting “Touched/Patched” in the patcher makes sense since the HD ISO isn’t a clean PSP structure, the patcher needs that flag to bypass certain checks.

And yeah, PS3 ISO Tools won’t recognize it because the HD version isn’t a typical PS3 ISO it’s more like a hybrid package with embedded PSP data. Rebuilding it to match Freedom Unite’s structure won’t help unless the patch itself is built for that format. So your method works, but only with the right patch version and settings.
