Can anyone confirm this odd Super Mario All-Stars quirk happens in Collection and All-Stars + World?

Now I'm not asking for a fix, I just want confirmation if it can happen in other versions...

There was an odd thing that happened with my standalone US copy where no matter what, the control type would always be B. I've seen other claims of this happening to other people, with one happening in All-Stars + World, but nothing about it happening in Collection.

Just to be clear: Your copy was a legitimate, first-party cartridge playing on legitimate, first-party hardware, right? If so, it might just be damage to an actual part of the cartridge itself that's causing the issue.

All-Stars was kind of notorious for being buggy back in the day (just ask anyone on TMK! ::winkfelix) – apparently, the + World version even moreso, because they essentially didn't do any bug testing on it – so I wouldn't be surprised if this is a slight glitch that's present across multiple versions. Every version of the game I've ever played has let you choose between both Type A and Type B controls without issue.

Dude, I'll say! I was validated one day browsing The Cutting Room Floor, and finding a glitch that my copy had in my childhood. Well, my mom's copy until I was old enough to play. Copy-pasting from TCRF...

And as for how a legit copy without a cheating device could do this by itself?

If I had to guess, Mom must've bought the Super NES with the free coupon for All-Stars, and thus had one of these earlier copies with the debug bug. To address OP's plight, it wouldn't surprise me if their copy of the game had a less-useful bug in it, and that Nintendo would've fixed it for the modern rerelease.

Huh interesting... I never knew about its debug mode. I assume that's what causes the locked type B controls?

Yes it's a legit copy on original hardware.

Also fr? Huh I'd be surprised if so since All-Stars + World came out after. ig I could ask TMK about it.

Is this an end of life game?
Not exactly end-of-life, but in the SNES’s waning years. The + World version came out in December 1994, so well before the last batch of first-party games, but all the big hitters had come and gone.

All Stars + World would have been a great game to have in the time before emulators, but past the year 2000 or so it really showed its age. You really want the original versions of SMB1 and Lost Levels, the GBA version of 3 with the e-reader levels unlocked, and the base version of World that’s less buggy.

The version of SMB2 USA on it is the definitive one, though, so if you can get the game cheap it’s definitely worth it for just that. It would have been nice to have a full version of the arcade Mario Bros. on it, too, but that’s what the GBA games are for.

For the longest time I thought All Stars + World was just a romhack or bootleg. I never realized it was actually an officially released cartridge. I could be wrong but I think Super Mario World came with our snes when we got it so it seemed weird to me they would release All Stars bundled with SMW.
Ninja Gaiden [OG] Trilogy
The snes versions are pretty bad though. The music sucks and the controls feel wrong. I had the snes trilogy and the nes versions when I was a kid and I would unhook my snes and hook up the nes just to play the Ninja Gaiden games because the snes versions were so bad.

What's wrong with the All Stars version of those?

I actually prefer the nes version of SMB2. It feels trippier. I don't like the way they made it look so similar to the other games in All Stars.

So did I! It's a massive amount of value in a single cartridge – definitely a must-buy if you were a latecomer to the SNES. You'd be getting hours and hours and hours of the best platform games ever made up to that point with the push of a button! The title screen being a simple edit of the original game's doesn't exactly scream "Nintendo Seal of Quality", either, but, well, it was still dandy at the time. THAT SAID:

The All-Stars versions of SMB1 and LL have an infamous bug that impacts the way your character bounces after hitting a block. Essentially:

THAT'S WHAT'S DIFFERENT.png

Instead of bouncing down and pushing forward off a brick (as in the originals), Mario gets pulled up, then drops down, eliminating accrued momentum. This completely changes the rhythm of both games, making them much more challenging (and unfair) than the originals, especially in later worlds. Several different patches exist to correct this issue, but on original hardware it'll always be there.

Also, the All-Stars version of SMBLL significantly changes the original's "completion" condition, gives you more lives to start with, removes checkpoints in certain levels, and a whole bunch of other stuff. It's essentially a simplified ROM hack of the original, and, as such, you're getting a lesser experience by playing it.

Fair enough! I actually really like the redone graphics, but it's pretty much dealer's choice with 2USA – no changes were made to the game, and both versions are the same in terms of bugginess. (Nothing was fixed from the original.) Just don't go with the GBA version – it's nostalgic to me, but there's screen crunch, an awful colour palette, and waaaaay too many new hearts added in, making the game far too easy to be all that fun.

I didn't know anyone with a snes that didn't also have Super Mario World but I guess if they started bundling All Stars + World with the snes or something after that would make sense.

Oh huh. I didn't know that. I always thought SMB on All Stars felt a little different than the nes version but I haven't played it since I was a kid so I guess I never really grasped why.

I never really liked lost levels or the Japanese SMB2. It always just felt hard and frustrating just for the sake of it. I've never beaten it. I'd rather just play SMB 1 or 3 instead.
Fair enough! I actually really like the redone graphics,
I like them in SMB 1 and it's a tie for SMB 3 between the original and the redone but SMB2 on the nes really captured the feeling of being in a dream world. I think the nes SMB 3 did a better job at looking like a stage show too but I do like the All Stars graphics.

I've never had much interest in the GBA Mario ports. The added voice sound effects alone is enough to put me off. I don't really like the graphics changes or the screen size issues you mention either. I think I remember there was some changes to level design or something too I wasn't a fan of. I just never really saw a reason to play them when the originals exist. Even when I had my GBA I remember seeing them in the video store to rent and there was no way I was wasting a rental on one of them.
