I'm not looking for the obvious ones (Resident, Silent, Fatal, etc.), I'm looking for stuff that the general player wouldn't know of that'll pull them knee-deep into the genre. System of choice doesn't matter much.

Honestly when it comes to horror almost all of them are popular especially to people who care about horror games, so for really ones "not many people knows" gotta look for Japanese games.

For example I liked this one a lot and its gore amazed me. It was like a Troma Entertainment movies-like game!!!!! lol:

I've been replaying through ObsCure with a friend through Steam Remote Play recently. I don't think it's as in-depth as a Silent Hill, but it definitely pulls off a great horror atmosphere with the sound and level design.

If you want to check out some more obscure survival horror games too, check out Dungeon Chill's Youtube channel. Like, two thirds of this thread so far have been fully featured by him, and his videos are great.

If pc is a option, phantasmagoria is famous for it.
If you want true horror, i have no mouth and i must scream is probably one of the most well known and the author of the book himself considers the game's best ending the well, best ending to his story.
Sweet home on the snes is fairly famous as well.

Alone In The Dark I, II & III are a must if you want to play something cool and genuinely scary (plus, they kind of invented the survival horror genre).

Veil Of Darkness is more chill, but can get pretty terrifying in spots.

And maybe (just maybe) something like Where Time Stood Still if you want something unsettling and atmospheric, if not necessarily horror-based.

As others have said, old PC games may be your best bet. Not sure if you want to go all the way back to pre-graphics, text-only games, but quite a few of the spookier titles were ones where you had to use your imagination to fill in the technology gap 😉

As far as more mainstream ones that haven't gotten a recommendation yet:

Uninvited (PC / Macintosh / NES)
The 7th Guest (PC / Macintosh) (also its sequel, The 11th Hour)
D (PC / Saturn / PS1)

Echo Night (PS1)
Echo Night 2: The Lord of Nightmares (PS1)
Haunting Ground (PS2)
Kuon (PS2)
Rule of Rose (PS2)

Speaking of Echo Night, try The First Voyage. It's a short point and click side game that was made for some Japan only compilation on PSP. But you can download it as a standalone PSP game at The Repo. It's translated to English.

If you want to try some RPG Maker PC games there's quite a few here.

Blank Dream is pretty interesting. You have to die horribly in order to advance the story.

The Witch's House, Misao, Ib and Mad Father have cult followings. Paranoiac is pretty good. Great sense of madness and claustrophobia. Some of these games can be bought on Steam as well.

Clock Tower, PS1 (1997)
Hellnight, PS1 (1999)
Dino Crisis, PS1 (1999)
Carrier, Dreamcast (2000)
Resident Evil Outbreak: Files 1 & 2, PS2 (2004-2005)
these are all games I've played and very much recommend.

its a bit of an action game but vampire hunter d on the ps1 is a resident evil clone with melee combat. controls take some getting used to, but i thought it was pretty cool.

If you're a shooter junkie, I highly recommend F.E.A.R. 1 & 2. They are J-Horror inspired first person shooters with combat inspired by the films of Jon Woo, and they are fantastic.
