Button Mapping

Man I'm happy to hear that. I thought I was goofed up in the head after attempting this lol
Nah. It would be more intuitive to self build a lunar lander, believe me.

Sounds like you've had it rough too. I have to figure out how to play this game with a controller tho. It's bothering me. I loved EVO search for Eden and the prequel that I'm trying to play is even crazier and more nuanced in its storyline and game design... but it's off-limits for now, I guess.

Oh? I played very little of that. My brain maps circle (or B or A, depending on your controller preference) as "defensive maneuver", be it dash, dodge, roll, or what have you.
Good.
Well, I could be more psychopathic and map jump to R1, because that’s how Ape Escape does it.

I can take a look around and see if there is a standalone PC-98 emulator that is a little more user friendly. If I recall correctly, though, the game you are trying to play is natively keyboard and mouse driven, so i'm not sure if it can be mapped properly.

Now, the most extensive mapping I've ever done was for some emulators, mainly PlayStation so mapping controls to the dualshock 4 was never an issue.

So dolphin was the one time I've really mapped one controller to another. I mapped A, B, Y, and X to...well, X, Square, Triangle, and Circle respectively, L and R to the triggers, and Z to the right bumper. C stick was right stick, obvs.

In terms of in-game button mapping. Devil May Cry. Nero's Blue Rose on right trigger, DT on the D-pad.

Fixed my sentences, sounded dumb.
