Anyone had a go at this yet big nod to contra and other run and gun games of the 90s.

Yeah this game is a lot of fun!
Its hard as balls though (true to the games that inspired it)

I love this game .
The gameplay was smooth , the stages awesome amd everything lifted that heavy weight with its great soundtrack.

What a Banger !

Yes, I enjoyed it. Thoughts:
  • Art: The retro art style is good and consistent, unlike many games trying but it looking flimsy
  • Stage Variety is nice trying different old school isms like an auto-scroll bike or Mode-7 stages
  • Gameplay: It's challenging, and not mindless you have to properly position yourself and aim
  • Music: I thought it was pretty good and got you pumped and super into it
  • Vibe: I love that they get the tropeyness of what makes 'save mankind'isms so good
Aside from all that, it's just little things I loved, like when you beat the game (not a spoiler) and are presented with a big 'Thank You For Playing!' message. Aside from PlatinumGames doing that, you don't see that kind of nice send-off in new games anymore, so I thought that was nice.

So yep, I recommend it. I also recommend their other game called 'Vengeful Guardian Moonrider' which I liked even more, (but its not a run-n-gun, more like a Hagane/Ninja Gaiden type) but that's surely my fanatic love for everything that is Hakaider or post apocalyptic cyborgs or toku.

If you liked Vengeful Guardian Moonrider then I think you will love Gravity Circuit. It's mainly inspired by Mega Man X but has a pretty unique combat system.

Oh man, I suuuper loved that one too! That game is so good (and awesome to recommend here hopefully more people play it). I played it originally on PS4 and went through it and had to hold myself back from getting it again on Steam just to play it on my Steam Deck. What a game haha.

Cool
I do love me some OG MMX. Thanks, I will look into the game

Great game. All the games made by Joy Masher are great. The only thing it is that they are really hard, lol. This game is like if a Contra Hard Corps II existed

Moonrider is amazing, and I hope we get sequels. I don't think I've seen a hard game that actually has such a well balanced difficulty curve as this one.

Yeah, I've played it. I did not like that enemies were in bigger number and did not die from a single shot. I'm talking about the weaskest grunts that always die in one shot in Contra games. Plus there are pure melee characters which imo have no place in run&gun genre. Game has fair share of bullshit moments and forces you to memorize all the threats on a stage otherwise the default amount of lives won't be enough.

I didn't try these games but often end up seeing them, and thinking they seem so good.

And with the descriptions here, seems like those are some good games made by good devs!

Not as good as Contra 3, but still a great game.....much better than the new contra thats for sure. -_-
