Biggest Tragedy in the Gaming Industry

Maximo 3 cancellation because to Capcom's awful managment(this confirmed by David Siller and Scott Rogers) and forced the team to make that godawful piece of shit named Final Fight Streetwise

as well... Clover Studio getting shut down by Inafune's orders...
Good thing Clover Became Platinum, couldn't say the same for Raven Software or Monolith...
Since you been gone!.gif

Well yeah sometimes it´s sad to see a game studio or series go under like Westwood or New World Computing. Even seeing DICE being butchered makes me sad.

But looking at games studios today that go under all I can say it well that what you get for pissing on your fans and that what you get for making slop no one want. Bioware and ubisoft and all them has them self to blame and you won´t see me sad when they are gone honestly I will celebrate.

Honestly...if Bioware, or even Ubisoft for that matter, ever, and i mean EVER get to shut down it would feel more like a suprise at this point considering how those two have managed to not sink at this point.
A suprise to be sure, but a welcome one.png

Sega exiting the console market; Microsoft entering
Katamari Dynasty DS cancelled
Konami fucking over Kojima, leaving MGSV unfinished and ZoE3/PT canned
Japan Studio's dissolution
Nintendo's soulless UI on the Switch and, from the looks of it, Switch 2
Borderlands and the rise of loot shooters

Edit: glad to see I'm not the only one upset over Japan Studios

Well yeah it would be suprise the live for so long but not that it happen becomes one could see that a mile away.

Only reason EA still around is thanks to their sports games and once in a blue moon they make something good. Jedi order, C&C remaster. EA stays alive thanks to sports nerds.

I think the biggest tragedy in gaming history is that it became a billion dollar industry.

Multi millions and we still had games be extremely reasonably priced and had more uniqueness to them, even the big titles.

Now we have AAAA slop that need to meet certain criteria. Another last of us remaster no one asked for. We still get great big budget games, but these days we all dunk on most of them because the game must reach some sort criteria to meet some political ideal that the marketing team has been convinced will make everyone buy it, even their grandmother.

It's little indie titles that give us a lot of content now, and medium budget titles.

Very rarely are the big titles consistently amazing as they were back in the 2000's.

Sega of Americas focus on peripherals, which is a very business way of viewing tech and ignoring software at the time was what put Sega under in the end.

Here is another one.

The dead of United Front, which meant Sleeping Dogs 2 getting cancelled.

I still can't get over how cool of an idea Smash+Grab was...
And let's not forget we lost any potential for a ModNation Racers 2.
I mean... we did at least get LittleBitPlanet Karting, but still.
United Front made such incredible games.

Speaking of great companies that went away too soon. PF Magic.
Imagine what the Petz series would've become if Ubisoft didn't destroy it.
Ubisoft also helped sow the seeds which led to the destruction of Free Radical, the creators of the TimeSplitters series. Then we lost TimeSplitters again when Embracer Group brought it back and killed it again. (Although looking at design documents, it could be argued that both attempts at a TimeSplitters 4, might have ended up being subpar.)

Another tragedy, is how LittleBigPlanet as a franchise is now effectively dead. With the last game being nothing more than a Super Mario 3D World ripoff, without any of the LittleBigPlanet creativity. Seriously, why isn't there a level maker in that game!

And yet, I still think all of that pales in comparison to what the original post showed. Alice Asylum would've been an incredible game. :(

The fact that both Mega Man Legends 3 and Scalebound have been canceled hurts my heart.
Absolutely true !

Somehow i can understand that Scalebound wasnt conceptually focused and what it really wants to be , but it still had HUGE potential behind it .

I still cant forgive capcom what they pulled out with Megamen Legends 3s development and how they backstabbed their fans . They have the concept already , it could be build upon and be the best Megaman-series besides the Classic - and X-series as an alternative .

Its always capcom and their allergy towards huge successes . They either botchering it or downright cancle it with extreme idiocy .

Thats the same with the huge missed opportunity with Dragons Dogma and its sequel . It could be HUGE !! But they refused to give it all out .

I think my "gaming tragedy" would be Pandemic Studios shutting down. They had a lot of potential. Though I hope that the former people in the company are doing okay.
Yeah. Every one of their games were straight heat. Mercenaries and Battlefront are the biggest tragedies I think. I think those two series had way more potential than Destroy all Humans. And I don't really see The Saboteur being a full franchise. At least we got those DAH Remakes.

when they shut down Japan Studio forever, killing all my hope for a new Ape Escape or a new Patapon game. (And maybe even a new LocoRoco game)
Also:
YOU'RE TELLING ME THERE WAS GONNA BE A CRASH TWINSANITY REMAKE?!
AND IT NEVER HAPPENED?!
THAT GAME WAS MY CHILDHOOD!
It was never really started. TT just really wants to do it. I think they've finally realized that they don't want to be trapped in the LEGO mines forever lol. But that game has always been a sad moment for them. They wanted that game to be the best one yet, and for it to spawn pseudo sequels, like the Cortex Chaos game they were making where he could use a shit ton of gadgets, Or at the time they were the original devs of Tag Team Racing, and they would've introduced Nina in that game instead.

I miss LucasArts dearly, but to be honest... their closure wasn't surprising news. They had gone through so many changeovers with their management, their goals, and the way they operated. I was fortunate to know someone who had worked there for many years, and though they weren't around at the very end, the general feeling was that the studio had simply been put out of its misery

It's a fascinating story, and well-worth reading into.

Like a lot of studios, LucasArts / Lucasfilm Games started small. Their main offices were on Skywalker Ranch, and they were given pretty much free reign to develop their games, with only a few specific rules:

1. Don't use Star Wars
2. Don't lose money
3. Don't embarrass the Lucasfilm brand

As great - and beloved - as many of the Star Wars games were, it also kinda signaled the beginning of the end. In a nutshell, LucasArts was given the OK to make Star Wars games as part of a larger effort to revive the Star Wars brand - and bring in money - in advance of the release of the prequel trilogy.

That meant that the LucasArts mantra went from "don't lose money" to playing the role of moneymaker, almost overnight. New management was brought in, the pressure on the developers started to ramp-up, etc, etc. It wasn't so bad for the first few years, but once the prequels were deep in production (and post-production) the work culture and internal structure had changed dramatically.

Given all the turnover during that era, I'm actually kind of surprised the studio lasted as long as it did.

Apologies for the rant, but yeah, this is something that hits pretty close to home 😭
Had no idea about this. Really interesting.

The dead of Psygnosis

Yeah, these guys made cool stuff back then, I liked Lemmings and Destruction Derby.

Yeah, Sleeping Dogs is one of my all time favorite Crime Drama games. United Front got screwed seven ways to sunday with that. Getting canned by Activision just to finish the game under Square Enix, and get canned by them because they were yet another Squeenix owned western dev they didn't want to fund.

God, Raven and Monolith. One got sent to the Call of Duty mines and the other got sent to Warner Brothers limbo. At least Raven got to work on some of the cool COD's, Monolith made a banger mechanic and WB patented it just as quickly as they did Bullet Time.

Since MML3 has already been mentioned, I'm going to say Maverick Hunter. Not because I think it would be good, but because I wanted to see how much of a train wreck it would be.
Honestly? I always thought that game looked cool. But I think a lot of those Mega Man projects at the time probably would have been subpar, and as much as it pains me to say, MML3 as well. Seems like Capcom was just mishandling that IP back to back every time they started a project. And it all led up to dog ass Mega Man 11. I still hate that game, Only one I didn't finish.

I'm gonna be quite honest. I see Bioware getting closed eventually, but I don't see Ubisoft closing any time soon. Too many casuals enjoy Far Cry and Assassin's Creed. I'm one of them lol. Far Cry more than Ass Creed though. Idk, I just wish we could see some good change in the industry for once instead of having to sit through all of these closures and restructures that don't even change anything. I think that's the real tragedy here, all of these studios died for naught.

Kojima is a bittersweet topic. I think Death Stranding was worth it honestly. But I really wanted Silent Hills.

I think that the OG Xbox and the Xbox 360 were awesome consoles, so it's not complete shit.

I didn't know there was gonna be a Katamari game for the DS, that would've been baller.

I get what you mean about the Switch UI, seems like Nintendo lost all charm after Iwata died.

I like Looter Shooters, and I like Borderlands, but I think a lot of the other studios that do it don't really do it well. I hate Destiny, and modern Bungie as a whole. I can't think of any other looter shooters, but I liked Shadow Warrior 2 lol.

That quad A shit is so dumb lol. I only ever saw Ubisoft use it with Skull and Bones, never anyone else. But I get what you mean. Idk though. I still think there are plenty of cool AAA titles on the horizon and are already out. They just aren't the ones people are talking about. People dogged on Rise of the Ronin for looking like a PS3 game, but that might be one of the best games Team Ninja has dropped. Stellar Blade was awesome, and it turned a great profit for the developer. We got those soulslikes like Khazan that are still cool. I think Doom will be great regardless of how shitty Bethesda is. Idk, I think there is plenty of passion still in the industry. It's more so just being bogged down by the business aspects these days.

As much as I certainly wont buy anything from Ubisoft nowadays, I will not wish here for them to go under. Polarized muhricans wishing people to loose their jobs because of their culture war I suppose...

The biggest low in the gaming industry for me was the leverage buyout scam of ZAUM and subsequent firing of the authors of Disco Elysium.

Or maybe that time when Steam was selling pirated copies of The Sinking City, while Bullfrog Ukrainian studio was trying to get paid for their work by scam publisher Nacon.

As much as I dont like Ubisoft the white noise surrounding Shadows basically makes it impossible to discuss in any real capacity without culture war bullshit.

Another one I never got over is the ESRB ratings going solid black instead of the cool fuzzy letters they used up to like 99/00 iirc
Man the fuzzy ones look so cool compared.

LittleBigPlanet and ModNation Racers were such amazing series. I hate how Sony handles their ips these days.

Me and my friend played Disco Elysium recently, we didn't know about the publishing fiasco before we bought it. It's a stellar game. Too bad.

Nacon is a greasy ass company man.

I agree, I watched a friend play it, and it honestly looks fun. It does seem though from some of the story that it might've been a thing where they designed it around Naoe, and then corporate forced them to put Yasuke in. Yasuke's part could've been cool if it wasn't locked to the modern ideal shit.

A sad foreshadowing of the refinement culture coming to plague graphic design. Also its really funny they would celebrate their 20th anniversary. Like who the fuck would even tweet #esrb20 aside from trolls
Idk that was just the best comparison picture i could find lol.

The only thing that particularly upset me is they used generic trap beats mixed with 'oriental' music. Like they couldnt even be fucked to come up with original or interesting beats beyond Travis Scott With A Koto

Yeah, that was the biggest thing I noticed. It's strange too. Odyssey and Valhalla both had music composed by people that were of the culture. The Flight did Odyssey and they are Greek, and Einar Selvik did Valhalla and he is Norwegian. Idk why they couldn't be assed to get some really good Japanese folk artist to do Shadows. Idk if anyone was Egyptian on the Origins team but that had really good sounding Egyptian music too.

Einar Selvik and long runner asscreed composer Jesper Kyd, and Sarah Schachner. The "traditionnal" songs in Valhalla were a bit boring tbh. Selvik aimed for historical accuracy and most of the time it's just the guy singing translated old songs. He could have gone a bit more crazy and talk to his buddies from Sahg to get some metal soundtrack.

Same thing with Jesper Kyd. When the guy let go he pulls crazy stuff like the Vermintides soundtracks.
