Not to seem like an a-hole or anything, but you could've just said "Ys 1."
Play PSP or PC version of of Ys I & II Chronicles.

You can always go with the original for the OG experience or the PSP version, which I feel is the best version of the games.

I've only ever played the Master System version.

Played the psp version then set it to ps2 ost and image.

The fact that nobody is recommending the Steam version is baffling

If a game has a billion ports,
Either play the original (If its in your language)
Or the latest port. (Again if available in your language)

Then you will either experience the game as the Devs intended, or the most patched/re-balanced option.

Unless this is the terrible situation where each port has exclusive content. Then good luck playing them all

PC/PSP remake is good but it is remake
If you want to play something close to the original i recommend PC Engine port

ys 1 and 2 chronicles on steam, though i had a weird issue on that port, if you have NO gamepad connected the FPS drops to 15, and goes to 60 with a gamepad connected, maybe it was on my PC but just in case it's not plug a gamepad in LOL. (keyboard works still)besides that its a solid port, graphics options, music options, and you have both ys 1 and 2 there!

but yeah if you want "original" original the PC engine port for sure, i'm not a fan of the old version over chronicles at all

FYI, if you want a port where you actually HAVE AN ATTACK BUTTON (ys1 original and chronicles you just hit enemies running into them)
the DS port has a mode to actually have a attack buton and also features (low res) 3d graphics for background and buildings.

Chronicles on PC or PSP

PC Engine CD/Turbografx CD. The soundtrack for these games on this system is historical IMO. You must play it this way to experience the masterfully composed, arranged, and produced compositions, your ears will thank you. If you make it to YS III, I will give you a bit of a secret, there is a higher quality Mega Drive patched rom version that uses the PC Engine tracks. So you get to play it the best way possible.

Surprised to see how few people are recommending this version. It is (IIRC) the only version with full voice acting, including impressively professional English VA for 1989, and the graphics are in my opinion far more appealing than the more modern versions. It also has seamless continuation from Ys 1 to Ys 2 whereas many of the other versions still keep them separated.

Which is reminding me I actually need to play it, it's been on my list forever.

Ys Book 1 and 2 on TurboCD is a great version, but the PC version of Ys 1 and 2 Chronicles is also a great version and more practical to get into.

It's on Steam and GOG, who has it 70% off on sale right now. There's a sale on most of the Ys games, and Xanadu Next this month. All of them are worth checking out.
