So, as you can see from my profile, I mess with virtual pets heavy. They're casual as heck, but they're genuine commitments. So, I wanna hear the forum's take: WHICH ONE IS YOUR FAVORITE?

(If any of you say Seaman, istg...)

dragon quest monsters 2 and the choa garden from sonic adventure battle 2.
legend of the river king has a fish raising mode. never could figure it out.
digimon world 1.
ff4 for the ds has a trainable unique summon exclusive to that version.

On PC I had Dogz 4. If you also had Catz 4 the games would combine. It even had a modding scene back in the day for custom background locations, breeds, toys, and other stuff.

For the little tamagotchi-like ones, I had this digimon version.

I will go with MasterEn on dragon quest monsters 2
Do Palworld count ?
not so many I can think of on PC.
And Pokemon is just to basic.
palworld. that would depend on what you do in the game. i don't have much on it besides the meme: pokemon with guns
pokemon can count, but the pet raising stuff comes very late game; possibly even post game. and it's mainly for breeding pokemon for competitive play. or shines, if you give enough of a shit about that.
dragon quest is something of an anomaly. set up like pokemon, [3v3 instead of 1v1]
but it can actually hit you kind of hard when you get into one of the core mechanics, breeding.
the monsters leave after they perform the marriage ceremony [ i don't recall off hand what it is called]
they are gone forever. and in their place, is their baby; entrusted to you to look after and care for.
the baby has stat influences from its parents and learns as many moves as they did before leaving.
and the combo of parents leads to crazy results too.
you can have a basic looking slime who knows flamethrower and instant death. a giant manta ray with healing spells and enough stamina and defense to rival senator armstrong. or a dracky with lots of buffs and debuff spells.
and the best part, you pretty much start this stuff after the first boss. its a core mechanic of the gameplay loop and can give you a wide range of emotions and thoughts about the monsters that you meet.
i've started the game over a few times. i'm still always a little sad when slash the slime, your first buddy, leaves after the ceremony. i name the baby slash the 2nd; in his honor.
apologies about going a bit off the rails. this is my third attempt at this post. i kept rewriting every time that i got to pokemon and i remembered that games exist after the first gen.

The Sims.

On a related note, I remember that back in the Win98/WinXP era there were a lot of desktop companions that would dance around on your screen or mess with your mouse cursor for attention. Came in all shapes and sizes, from cute pets to anime characters and real people (those were usually on the lewd side of things).

i remember the screensavers the most. my favorite was one that had a rock, paper and a pair of scissors battle out to see who would win. better than any pay-per-view fight or super bowl match up.

Just saying not bashing on pokemon I love it I said it´s basic because that is an answer allot of people think or would say.

Oh one could say FF13-2 as you can have monsters in your party but it´s not a pet sim in that kind of sense. But the only reason I like FF13-2 No damn lightning and monsters in party and Hope is less pain in the ass like he is in the first game.

I also gonna throw in Invizimals, Monster rancer, Dinosaur king, Drone Tactics
there's a lot more that can be done with pokemon. but game freak won't mainly because most people just play the main campaign and have a few battles with friends and family members. dragon quest is more single player.
basic stuff can and does work, but they could add stuff like the jhoto games did and let you explore previous regions and see familiar and new faces in those places.
ff13-2 is only marginally better than its predecessor, but not by much. the game cover lies to right off the bat. lightning front and center, and she's in the game for like 10 minutes. and it gets worse form what i remember because the time travel thing seems to come out of nowhere and is only linked to the first game by a single line of text you can read after completing a side quest; which most people might skip. i did that side quest and forgot about that line until i was trying to learn what the plot of the second game was. not doing a very good job of setting up the next part of the story there.
i thought about including monster rancher in my earlier post, but i only played a few minutes of the first game and a short bit of a card game[?] on the gbc. and monster ranching wasn't what drew me to the game.

there's a few im thinking of that sound like that:
  • shimeji, which were chibi characters that would walk around ur screen, climbing on open tabs & cloning themselves. i see streamers use these a lot nowadays
  • ukagaka, which are a bit older i think & feature larger sized stationary characters (usually anime girls) that you could interact with & have them do a variety of things like play music, open a certain app, etc.
    • digital witch mayura originated from ukagaka!

I had one when I was a kid but don't remember much other than it having three small face buttons and the shell being red.

oh, you just remined me of the digivices. those were fun. and the skannerz toys. one of the few times that i wanted to go to the store. to scan barcodes.

(oopsie double post)
forgot to mention my fav vpets lol

tamagotchi On is my favorite of the backlit/color tamas. i love that when breeding, ur child will inherit different parts of what their parents looked like. i used to connect mine to the app at the time (not sure if its still available) which let you meet other ppls tamas so u could breed with them which was sooo coool.
I only wish this had the same smoothness/processing power(?) of tamagotchi pix, which i found less fun for some reason.

getting into videogames, the monster rancher series is really fun. sorta like pokemon but with a heavier focus on raising & breeding your monsters. i think the psx/ps2 version are harder to emulate as they required you to actually take out the gamedisk & insert any cd/dvd into the console which would generate a monster for you, but there might be romhacks to work around that. the nds & gba versions are my favorites as they don't require any of that & are still a blast to play

I never had one of those, but it is my understanding that Digimon started with these and they continued to exist in parallel with games and other mediums based on the IP.

I think Digimon games are brilliant to be honest. The Digimon Story subseries has so many good entries.
digimon kind of weirdly mirrors pokemon a lot.
pokemon barely has a story; and a little bit of lore. digimon has both in spades.
pokemon have to follow biology to a small extent. digimon says "fuck it. the talking cat can turn into a sexy angel babe. the ball with bat wings can be dracula. literal piles of shit can be your best friend and so much more."
the games are a bit weird, but have a very interesting variety.
pokemon mainly just does the same stuff with a new spin off here and there; usually locked to a single generation.
digimon's first three are: pet simulator, dungeon crawler and rpg. i've heard of there being a detective series, i think. there's also fighting games, a video game based on the card game, some co-op action games.
you'd think digimon would be more popular in general. but being popular inevitably brings about confinement. hopefully the next game that comes out is just as good, if not better than the ones that came before it.
apologies for being a bit off topic.

Yeah Cyber Sleuth is awesome. It's part of the Story subseries (a bigger RPG slant) as compared to World (a larger focus on raising). The DS also has a great trilogy in the Story style.

cool. i'll have to check those out at some point.

“Insaniquarium” is surprisingly hardcore, it felt like it was one of the og “plot twists its dark” games

“Fossil Fighters” in on a similar vane as Pokémon but for kids obsessed with dinosaurs.

I feel like the Princess maker style games kinda fit the bill. My personal favourites of that kinda genre is “Volcano Princess” and “Long Live The Queen”

Damn didn’t release how loss this genre feels, idk if any of these count but their on the right tracks

Side note “Talking Angela” is burned in my mind because of that stupid hoax around it, it’s on the same vain too. Loved Webkinz as a child.

RIP Bella Sara
