For me, it gets really hard to beat the original Mystic Cave zone (1 player) track from Sonic 2.

It's funky, it's spoopy, it's just fuckin' excellent for want of a better term.

Even some of the other great tracks in the game (Oil Oceon, Casino Nights, Chemical Plant, etc) don't even come close to matching this song for pure VIBE

From more recent games, I think Sonic Mania has many bangers like Studiopolis

It even gave Prison Island a pretty sweet theme

It really is about the context in which you first played a game that makes it stand out more. I had never played SA2 when I first played Shadow, but I knew Prison Island was significant and I think that made the moment a lot more memorable.
