World Cup coming! So, I'm pretty unfamiliar with 16-bit generation football games, and I wanted to take a closer look at them. Which game would be a good one to start with?

this 1 was a major step up in every aspect

unreal game alright im a total PES head but this paved the way
It's part of my childhood's lore — you can hardly find anyone who doesn't know it, and there are real life tournaments in my area all the time.

thats pretty cool i rented the ISS original out a lot on friday nights from the local video shop
The original Internacional Superstar Soccer, despite having less teams, is a better game. It is a more edgy game, where you can hit photographers behind the goalie with shots and see them fall down, there is a description of each team telling you about its dynamics when you scroll choosing the team, and the goalkeepers are less annoying.

The next game, Deluxe, has more teams, but feels more sanitized, not as fun.

Yeah, the original ISS has a bunch of small details absent in Deluxe. Like the few different referees have their own personalities in refereeing.

Deluxe has more raw content, but feels stripped down, blander.

Brother! We did that until we realized that we were renting it so much, we might as well buy it XD

Neat! It was one of my first PC games as well.

Surprisingly playable for such an early thing.
Definitely! I wish I kept hold of it! A lot of the other games from around that time and before were pretty basic. I think my first PC game might've been one of the FIFAs - maybe 99

Cool! Mine was FIFA 98: RTTWC.

I wish I still had it.

Sensible soccer and International superstar soccer deluxe.
The second one has an active mod/hacking community to this very day.

I like using cheap gift cards because they’re affordable and delivered instantly, which makes them really convenient for quick gaming purchases. Many users mention fast service and smooth transactions, which adds to the appeal . However, since it’s a third-party platform, I still prefer making small purchases first just to stay safe.
If you’re new to 16-bit football games, a great place to start is Sensible Soccer. It’s simple, fast, and very easy to pick up. The top-down view makes passing and movement clear, so you won’t feel overwhelmed. It focuses on fun gameplay rather than realism, which is perfect for beginners.

Another good option is FIFA International Soccer, especially if you want something closer to modern football games. It has an isometric camera and a more realistic style, though it can feel slower.

Overall, start with Sensible Soccer for fun and accessibility, then try FIFA to experience a more traditional football simulation.
