As the ancient meme says:
"Amateurs"
I feel like the crown still has to go to REmake when it comes to remakes.
Keeps the spirit of the original alive while expanding it both mechanically and content-wise and also improving the visuals in a gorgeous, considered style.
Personally I also really enjoy Resident Evil 2 Remake, but with that one I can totally understand the argument that it loses too much of what defined the original to be considered on the same level as REmake.
(Also, Odin's Sphere is such a gem, I really wish Vanillaware would just port their catalogue to PC already!)
The only one that encapsulates the same feeling i got with System Shock(2023) was RE1 Remake, and that's because both games not only maintain the roots that made them great in the first place, but also improve and add little touches to become even better works of art, if RE2, RE3, were made like the RE1 remake (yeah fixed camera and everything, you know, like they should have) and in the case of 3 instead of completely removing content from the base game, they instead added more to it, then i would like them more.
I will always hold a grudge with RE4 remake because it was unnecessary to begin with (yes it was, don't cry at my tank controls, they were smooth as butter in 4), but it removed the charm (and even some sections of the og game) that it had, if i were to compare i would put it this way:
RE4 2004 is like the OG(and only good one) Total Recall, action, horror, cheesy one liners that are fitting for a seasoned protagonist (why in the actual fuck did capcom remove those in the remake just to make Leon a brooding bitch is anyone's guess), and overall just a fantastic work.
And then comes RE4 Remake taking itself "Seriously" all of a sudden (again, WHAT THE FUCK?!), with less charm than the og, instead we get those hd assets and scenarios, which honestly look convoluted as fuck if you ask me, seriously, that place has more junk and bones than a third world country communal cementery, instead of less, which made the setting of the village more believable. Characters that are more serious and look "good" in the sense that now everyone can fap to ashley without feeling regret (which i don't care and didn't back then) and the rest of the cast just feel like they read too much twilight with how broody as fuck they all feel, no codec styled calls between leon and the villains to make some ham wars between them, and outright some sections (and one boss) removed entirely, so yeah?, why remake perfection?
