Best old school Anime / Manga which still holds up well if not perfectly today?

Oh shit, I can actually talk in here
Cool, Hope no one minds a noob's opinion on the boards

So, Bubblegum Crisis is like this gritty cyberpunk story set in a city that’s all neon and shadows. It’s about these badass women in leather, fighting against soulless robots and corporate control, just trying to stay alive and keep some kind of meaning. The vibe’s dark and moody, but there’s also this cool sense of rebellion in their fight. It’s like a mix of tech, chaos, raw and real, but with style.

These were nice. Shame this got cancelled since the economic bubble bursted...

Bubblegum Crash wasn't as good unfortunately.

There's also the A.D. Police spinoff that I consider to be almost better.

Legend of Galactic Heroes...it literally ruined anime for me lol. Nothing compares if you want a political/military/human drama played straight. (In space!!) Still a blast to go back and watch random episodes.
(If you're going to watch it, please don't watch the reboot first...)

Also, Spriggan
Incredible animation

I really like it conceptually. It's like Gundam but even more strategic and I dare saying more mature as they ditched the whole "giant mechas doing dogfighting" thing.

I love the aesthetic of the Galactic Empire but gosh the lore is heavy. Since those are originally books there are a ton of details about the world and how both major factions have their own calendars thus making it complicated to follow outside of an actual guide showing the actual epoch in AD.

Also there are OVAs, movies and series so I get lost...

Somebody made that chart:

Gunbuster is a pretty good old anime that I think still holds up.
The one from 1988, anyway. I haven't watched the 2004 version and I'm guessing it's a remake.
I don't really care for remakes when the original was fine, but that's my opinion or whatever.
6 Ep's + a Movie. 12 if you count the 04 version

Fushigi Yuugi is still a top anime despite how old it is.
It still looks really good, and the story is good as well.
I rewatched it probably six or eight months ago.
Was the first Anime i bought a Boxset of... on VHS no less :D

I put it above NGE personally.

Crows and GTO mainly for the fact that it added great humor to the delinquent genre

Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop

Editing it just to put Mind Game, Ghost In The Shell, Perfect Blue, Tokyo Godfathers and Paprika (yes, love me a Satoshi Kon movie) in the list cus I forgor...

You all inspired me last night so I went digging for some of the anime I used to love. Unfortunately I can't find a ton of it. As others mentioned, some like Dominion Tank Police, Bubblegum Crisis, Vampire Hunter D were huge faves for me. Some that I loved but have no idea how to find these days would be:
- Bubblegum Crash
- Dangaio (one of the best theme tunes ever)
- Guyver (I guess it was Bio-booster Armor, since it was probably early 90s when I saw it)

I went digging on Funimation to see if any of the old 80/90s stuff was on there, but there wasn't a lot. There aren't any other streaming services out there I'm not coming across are there? I'm kind of assuming I need to keep an eye on my local record shops for DVDs and such (even tho I haven't had an optical drive in like 15 years).

Grab a simple dvd / blueray drive and stick it in to your PC, as ebay is usually a good place to start for this stuff, also charity shops.

I recently found a reasonable copy of tenchi in tokyo on dvd for 15 bucks back in December last year. It was a boot leg, but worked fine and quality was reasonable. A lot of the places i have seen are coming out of malaysia, but i am in asia so it is easy to source them locally. However there are some repo providers who do ship to the usa.

It is unfortuniate, but with the advent of digital content, and problems with companies careing about thier back catalouge, we will see more and more anime / movies become dead media.

On a side note, there are some other unofficial streaming sites, and some times there are burried listings from you tube. Not sure how long they will be up for, with Nvidia's new AI sdk which finds videos / content in videos with the help of AI, so that they can be removed quicker.

Below are what i found from a simple search, watch them before they get removedi guess.

Still love this theme tune!

Honestly I think it'd be easier for me to list animanga which haven't "held up well". But if I had to give some examples I'd say stories like Gundam 0079 and Zeta, Rose of Versailles, Hokuto no Ken, Utena, Gunbuster, etc are still as enjoyable and thematically relevant as they were when they released
