PC Best old 90s/2000s pc game?

View attachment 88260

Not gonna lie mate. The idea that Doom, one of the most influential games ever made, that literally led to the FPS genre being referred to as "Doom Clones", wasn't one of the most beloved games of the era is certainly *a* take.

OP said that nobody ever talks about 90s PC games, so I responded with one of the most talked about games ever, I think you missed the plot here.
But we all know OP meant the games beyond DOOM and the OP is right lol. I would say you have lost the plot if you actually cared about the plot here, mate lol.

I don't care if something is first or early of its kind. I won't think a painting is good just because the painter died 500 years ago or I won't act like a book is legendary just because it's the first in its genre. I will never discuss how cave paintings that painted a very long time ago are important for visual arts lol. It doesn't change the fact that these games weren't good enough for me and I never thought 3D improved a game. I prefer playing Zero Tolerance because it's a decent first FPS game you probably can find in the history of FPSs while I don't think DOOM was ever a decent game worthy to even play. Since my brain cannot comprehend what's nostalgia and I'm not an emotional man, I can see how DOOM always was a bad game and I won't even mention the cringy teen BS the game is lol. DOOM had a cult, as anything despite how BS it can have a cult and therefore only their fan bois have high esteem for whatever they love. However in recent years DOOMs only existence is about making it run in anything as a fun meme, not because the game is hot shit lol. In that context Zero Tolerance felt more normal and better in a "finally a decent FPS game" and if you had said Zero Tolerance is "DOOM-clone" I would laugh so hard because it would be like saying Ferrari cars are mechanical horse carts lol. Then your argument would be "but majority liked DOOM" then my counter-argument would be a reminder of how majority thought world is flat too so I don't have to give a damn about how the people who cannot have an opinion of their own chant popular BS just because they are popular in a very overrated way. If DOOM was a good game even for its time I would say how great the game is. But it's more like Super Mario on NES that's a boring platformer. You just jump for 2 minutes and you get bored, and you just shoot for 2 minutes DOOM bores you. In a way these are the game not liked for the game they are but the nostalgia people had for whatever reasons. For example first video game I ever played was Super Mario on a friend's NES and that day was a good day, still it doesn't prevent me from thinking how Super Mario sucks and I prefer better platformers lol. That's the way I thought playing these games at the time. And I'm a man who always update my opinions. For example back then I thought Contra Force is peak in platformer action games until I played Demolition Man and so on. Back then I liked Top Gear 2 as a racer but not anymore after I played Racing Lagoon. So if I still think Racing Lagoon is peak in racing genre I have a good logical reason for it lol. And just because I liked a game before won't mean I will always give importance to the game. That's why I won't even think Contra Force is some hot shit anymore. Time changes, so as how your opinion should be. In that regard giving importance to DOOM feels like giving driving horse cart exaggeratedly overrated importance lol. So in that regard when there are better FPSs in 90s saying DOOM was hot shit and talking about the game as if it was the only decent FPS around doesn't make sense to me when Zero Telorance exist when it's a way advanced and proper FPS game that released just 1 year after of DOOM and in the same decade we have Redline that's way more advanced than Half Life 1 lol. Anyway my dude carry on lol.

Every time I miss you I will write a Great WOT of China just to annoy you and believe me I can write a book about anything like it's my special skill lol. If I was an RPG character my ultimate skill would be talking people to death and after they die I would talk so hard even their corpse would stop existing. :DDD

I barely remember this game and it's just because I remember I bought this game the day I also bought Restricted Area and it was a good day especially because I didn't even had to use my AK that day lol. Imagine Diablo but sci-fi cyberpunk-like version and that's Restricted Area for ya lol.

I am a total sucker at RTS, but Homeworld was the game I loved so much back in the days.

After some isometric Starcraft it was stunning.
All 360 degrees 3D battlefield? No flat surface, no up or down, only star constellations as a background? Holy cow!

Complexity is insane, maybe just for me, but still I was so hooked in. The 2nd game fixed some flaws and added QoL, but still I enjoyed original the most. I didn’t play the remake, so can’t tell about it.

The cool stuff:
- Campaign is great
- Unit capacity (you have limited crew, this is emigration fleet), so no cheap tactics with big hoards
- Units need supplies in the field (surprise), not only resources to build them, also energy (ammo) for engines and guns, which is not infinite
- Units can go kamikaze or act as a live shield
- Squadrons in addition to groups, with their own formations, tactics and orders. That’s the key to victory, not just fast clicking.
- Only two fractions which are mostly equal in terms of abilities, only difference is visual design. For me it is a plus, as I opposites cannot gain any advantages.

Always thought the game was really underrated as most of my pals never heard of it. I can recommend it if you like Star Trek setting or fan of other RTS made by Relic, such as Warhammer 40k Dawn of War.

P.S. I think there’s RPG game in the same universe, but I forgot the name.

Oh yeah, I forgot this game existed. Back then I enjoyed playing such games and X series. For example I liked to play this game a lot too: https://store.steampowered.com/app/6420/Nexus__The_Jupiter_Incident/

i played the web port of diablo 1 last year and honestly, it really does live up to the hype. just a fun, chill experience wandering around and taking in the atmosphere. i wish there was more of a story to it, but what's there is fun; crappy halloween movie/haunted house vibes, but that makes it more charming. now if only blizzard would release their death grip on diablo 2 classic and let GOG publish it...

The games I enjoyed the most from that time were the Lucasarts point-and-click adventure games:

Monkey Island 1 and 2
Sam and Max
Day of the Tentacle
The Dig
Full Throttle

Monkey Island 2 is my favourite adventure game and I love the OST. I like how the Monkey Island games blended humour with the dark undertones, the games were funny but didn't derail the story into being a joke as I find some newer games do. I'd recommend new gamers play the originals as it maintains some of that darker atmosphere, which I felt was lost in the remasters, especially the first game.

Another game which stands out is:
Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness and its expansion pack 'Beyond the Dark Portal'.

I found Warcraft II to be intense! The combination of the (then impressive) CGI cutscenes, the briefings before the missions and the music really psyched me up and gave a feeling of desperation to many of the missions. I had played the first Warcraft and Dune 2 as well, which were great too, but I felt this was a noticeable improvement in the gameplay, especially the controls and interface.

I remember playing a lot of ManxTT Superbike and Screamer 2. Also Starcraft Brood War.

check out this sweet Windows 98 website i found on Neocities! It's like Windows 93 except there's no risk of malware!
I was able to use the paint program on it and save it to my actual computer! It was a small screen so i tried to work with it. I call it, "Who Needs a Switch 2?"

This thread has plenty of recommendations from the community and its mostly 90s/00s, too bad it wasn't continued
I should get my ass in gear one day and find a way to make that spreadsheet that I've been floating as an idea since goddamn February + add some more short reviews of my own.

I can talk about many as I grew up in the Dos and win 95-98 era but I don´t wanna boor people.

For me I feel Retrogamer is well mostly for Retro consoles as that´s what on the Reop and what people love the most.

I mean even when I talk about the games I play no one cares becuse it´s modern PC games.

I love both as Sega master system was my very first time playing games ever when I was 5 and PC I got in to thanks to playing games at school when I was around 7-8 I think Sure it was educating games but still.

Anyway I don´t wanna bore people so I shall shut up.
