Wild Arms 1 & 2. Fantasy western theme with Zelda style tool based dungeon puzzles like Lufia 2. Not much more to say about them except they're a ton of fun.

Breath of Fire 3. Good exploration. Also has item based dungeon puzzles.

SaGa Frontier is more gameplay focused and is a pretty decent version of SaGa's stat based leveling and ability system.

Chrono Cross has much better gameplay than Chrono Trigger. It has good puzzles and dungeon design, a better combat system and the element system is pretty fun.

Final Fantasy IX is actually decently difficult compared to the other two psx Final Fantasy games and definitely my favourite out of the three of them. It has a good balance between characters with specific roles but also an equipment based ability system that allows for customization

Final Fantasy V. Even though the playstation port's kind of meh, it's still Final Fantasy V.

Tales of Phantasia but personally I prefer the snes version.

Vagrant Story, and Xenogears.

Gameplay wise, I'd say they are the best.
Eh, I'd disagree... Ambitious and interesting, yes, but both have some annoying flaws. VS becomes menu hell, the mechanics are not clear (even the in game manual has mistakes), and it's possible even the devs didn't fully understand what they had programmed O_o Xenogears I don't have as many gripes, and it has been awhile, but I recall a few points where I was confused about abilities or something...
Valkyrie Profile and Star Ocean: The Second Story
I REALLY need to find time to play those >_<
Wild Arms 1 & 2.
WA2 I would definitely put up there. Puzzle solving is fun, like you said, very Zelda. And on top of that, the combat mechanics are fun imo: nothing groundbreaking, but enough to set it apart.
Final Fantasy V. Even though the playstation port's kind of meh, it's still Final Fantasy V.
Huh, what problems were there with the 5 port from anthology? I was under the impression that port was generally fine. I know chronicles butchered chrono trigger.

I am compelled to give my vote to FF tactics >_< y'all know it's my favorite FF: I think it is the best incarnation of a job system, being able to freely recruit generics and build your party how you want is awesome! So much depth and freedom! I know srpg's are not for everyone though and battles can take awhile, but I cannot help myself >_< Also Agrais ::heart

Mostly loading issues as far as I know and the 1.0 version has bugs not present in the snes version. The loading issues aren't a problem in modern emulators I think but on original hardware and older emulators it kind of sucked. I remember trying it way back on epsxe and yeah the loading times were pretty noticable so there wasn't really much reason to play it over the fan translated snes version. This was before the GBA port existed.

Legend of Mana: I loved putting the "egg" on the map and then opening new areas, and everywhere there were side quests and cool characters to discover. Only downside, that maze in the jungle, but I followed a guide so I totally enjoyed the game(play).

Grandia, somehow they made turn based combat feel fast paced AND strategic at the same time

Yea, last time I played FF5 anthology version was a modern emulator (lol is epsxe evens till around?) and I don't recall anything noticeable, and I completely forget how it played on the psx... Guess I should try the snes version for 5 when I play it again. Just like for CT, the psx port was my only experience with it.
Let's be honest, gameplay was not the strong point of Xenogears. Having to repeat the same attacks 100 times to unlock finishers was annoying.
I don't know if it was that annoying me (it's been awhile and I don't really remember), but that rings a bell. I think I got like half way through xenogears (last I remember is like waking up in the middle of ocean or something?), and I have been meaning to revisit it, but it was something about the combos/fighting that was pissing me off, among other things...

To be clear though, I do like xenogears and vagrant story, but they both (vs specifically) had significant gameplay flaws imo. And iirc, it's confirmed that xenogears had rushed development right?
