I'm someone who loves playing first-person shooters.
But I have my favorites. In my opinion, it's Doom Eternal
TF2 (yes, really)
Half-Life 2
Ultrakill.

Which shooter do you prefer?

It's not my genre but I did enjoy a few.
Zero Tolerance (for a long time the only FPS I liked)
Portal 1&2
The Bioshock series. Yes. Even Infinite. But the Minerva's Den DLC from Bioshock 2 was one of the best stories I ever played through. Right in the kokoro.

Modded Quake 1
X-Men: Ravages of Apocalypse was a cool mod of it and was even officially sold, but it went through some development hell. It was originally being made by a fan and made official, and that's when it got too controlled and rushed. It ain't bad though.

I like lots of shooters:

Deus Ex
Half Life
Half Life 2
Unreal Tournament (1999)
Quake and TCs
Doom, Hexen, Heretic
Doom 2 and TCs
Dark Forces and Dark Forces 2 (Jedi Outcast and Academy I love but don't really count as FPSs)
Outlaws
Duke, Blood, Shadow Warrior
Soldier of Fortune
Project IGI
Halo
Goldeneye
Black

If I had to pick one, the one I come back to most consistently at the moment is probably a dead heat between Quake, Doom and UT. They're just fantastic for pick up and blast play.

I've played only a few of them, for me the best of the best is "Killzone Mercenary" on PSVita

...though also surprising mention for Outlaws. It's really fun, and the Historic Missions particularly are great for a 20 minute blast through.

If we're going for purely first-person shooters...

UT99 and UT2k4 still stands out for me as my favorites after all these years. Unsurprising since '99 is my first ever FPS game. Loved both games more when I learned about its modding scene. From ChaosUT with its new arsenal to new game modes like TDM4 and CTF4. Not to mention that one UT2k4 mod I've been following ever since I discovered it in the early 2010's, Ballistic Weapons.

Doom has also become a favorite of mine when I learned of its expansive modding scene. It puts a smile on my face when I see old games still getting love from its dedicated fans.

I prefer replayability a lot when it comes to FPS's, especially if it has an active modding scene. As much as I like the old Modern Warfare trilogy, I can only play its campaign for so long till I tire out of it. I only got to play it online for a short while (had crappy Internet speeds in the late 2000's to early 2010's), so it just cannot stand toe-to-toe with the other two for me.

With you there - though with with both UT 99 and 04 I get a surprising amount of enjoyment playing them vanilla against bots. I think when there isn't a single player 'campaign' there's a lot of enjoyment from just jumping on, ramping up the difficulty and blasting.

Doom's modding scene though, particularly through sourceports like GZDoom just outshines everything else. Some amazing work, and so many options. Notable mention though also to Quake and Duke in that respect.
