Which is the best console generation?
The PS1 era is the 5th generation.Whatever one is the PS1 era. Tons of classics beforehand and I go back to tons of them, but I think that 3D transition era was probably the most interesting in terms of how they were still trying to figure out how to do stuff in a 3D space, and you also got a lot of really weird stuff then, too. Also all the great weird peripheral stuff. It seemed like there was always something trying something new back then, just to see what would stick.
I agree. The 90s is when gaming transitioned from 2D to 3D.I don't think there is any decade where we saw as much evolution in gaming as we did in the 90s.
I see. I've always felt like it's a meaningless classification so I haven't committed it to memory. But, 5th it is, I'll put my vote in.The PS1 era is the 5th generation.
And the arcade was dead by the 7th.I picked 4th, but you can definitely make a strong case for the 6th as well. The early 90s and 16-bit era were a magical time for gaming. The arcade scene was great too.
One of the reasons why I'll never simply hate Nintendo despite their choicesQuick History to the kids.
Gen 1 is almost solely the Magnavox Odyssey.
Gen 2 is the industry crash generation. 1st crash in 1977, the 2nd in 83 which ushers in
Gen 3 the Nintendo generation. where the success of the NES saved the entire industry.
The video game crash really was only a thing in North America. Japan and Europe were pretty much unaffected. If the NES didn't revitalize the North American gaming industry, it would've been someone else, most likely SEGA.Quick History to the kids.

No one called it that then, though. I don't remember seeing a mention of generations until maybe the early 2000s, and even then it just felt like a really niche way to classify to no real advantage.Quick History to the kids.

First time I heard about it was on the repo.No one called it that then, though. I don't remember seeing a mention of generations until maybe the early 2000s, and even then it just felt like a really niche way to classify to no real advantage.![]()
I voted 5th gen, but honestly in a lot of ways 6th gen did go the hardest. Diverse, competitive, and ambitious roster of consoles. We can really see where gaming was going to go and the modern format we still get now really started to come through. There were still a lot of weird experiments and some niche stuff too.I have to go with 6th generation. Not just because that's the era I grew up in and started gaming, but because this was the era that gave us Dreamcast, Gamecube, Xbox, GBA and the PS2, which arguably has the greatest library of games depending on who you ask. Honestly though, I feel like Gens 4-7 were the best eras for gaming.
