Best 4th Installments

So, I've been thinking about it, and I've come up with a few series where the 4th game is generally thought of as at least one of the best in its series, if not THE best...

-Phantasy Star 4
-R4 : Ridge Racer Type 4
-ThunderForce 4


I had another in mind when I made this topic, but I forgot what it was...

Anybody have any other suggestions?

THAT was the one I was thinking of! Gran Turismo 4.

I also agree with Ace Combat 04, but I know a lot of people like 5 better...

I think I'm gonna add Growlanser 4 Over Reloaded (PSP) to my list, too, because I took to that game a lot better than I did Growlanser 2 on PS2.

I also agree with Ace Combat 04, but I know a lot of people like 5 better...

04 is a great game. But 5-0-6-7-X-03-02 are all amazing games. Its just 4 started it all

I think arguments could be made that there are better games in these franchises in a couple of cases (e.g., Super Mario 64 over Super Mario World; GTA5 or GTA3 over 4), but I also think strong cases could be made to suggest each of these is a franchise best.

I find it hard to go past the 1st Sly Cooper as the best, but that is a good bit of nostalgia talking! They are all pretty good, as far as I can remember.

The first one is pretty interesting in retrospect, it's different in some ways from the rest of the series by being level based instead of mission based, and didn't leave much room for error since you had no health.

I like all of them, but I thought the new approach of Sly 2 was an improvement and Sly 3 just built on that with more characters and optional challenges.

Thieves in Time has some of the funniest moments in the series for me, a surprising plot twist (which some fans hated), and one of my favorite bosses

I probably am due a replay through the series at some point soon, so maybe my opinion will shift slightly?

RIP Tanemura. The character, I mean. They just never brought him back after Yakuza 4. He was always my favourite to play as in that game, too. His move-set was so much fun

I just realized Mario Kart Double Dash is the 4th one as well! I don't think there's any kind of consensus on which Mario Kart is the best but for me this one is peak Mario Kart.
