Beloved mediocrity: What mediocre and/or unpopular games do you really love?

I have no shame in saying I love Aliens Colonial Marines. Get why people were mad at the time as it was buggy and didn't live up to the hype but I enjoy the hell out of the straight forward arcadey shooting, the multiplayer modes are fun, the game has great atmosphere, music, and a decent story. Plus the DLC is heavily overlooked including an opening level that is very reminiscent of Alien Isolation.

Also, Ichigo Marshmellow is a fun anime. I picked it up on DVD for dirt cheap a few years ago and was not disappointed

ASTAL - SEGA Saturn, 1995

Astal. Among the Saturn community, it is well known that this game is gorgeous. However, it’s also highly contentious. I think the game is overly punishing at many points. I also think that certain enemies lack proper teaching tools to let you know how best to handle them. And I think sounds like Astal’s grunts and ESPECIALLY the alert noise are painful to listen to.

That said, I love this game. I love it so much. I think the game plays quite well overall, being a gameplay and aesthetic successor to the cult classic “Ristar” from the Genesis. I think the world is not only beautiful, but poignant. It’s a post apocalypse but done in a colorful and dreamlike fantasy style. I think the bird mechanic is awesome, as it gives you a secondary drone to control that allows you to have extra health at the push of a button or crowd control. I think certain music tracks are incredible, making full use of the CD format and that 90’s video game sound.

I know that many people won’t look past the clunk. But I hope more people can. I love this game, and I want to recommend it to as many people as possible. It’s mediocre, maybe, but it’s beautiful all the same.

(also, it has 2 player co-op, with one player controlling Astal and another player controlling the bird with an expanded move-set. Pretty dope, if you ask me.)

Cladun: This is an RPG Series

This game was released late into PSP lifespan and only the second one was released on steam. It a game of dungeon crawling with rogue-lite elements with Rangeons. This game is not easy what so ever as rogue-like bull pile stank traps you can trigger, enemies that can one shot as there no invisibly frame ,and you'll be greatly under leveled if you don't power level. Thankfully the traps can be used against enemies and when you have equipment with full resistances you can heal from normal damages and traps alike. The cool part about this game is custom made user pixel art images and music using MML. This game does have multiplayer, but you need friends or a community get together to enjoy it. Later this month Cladun X3, so hope to see some people play it.

Gun Survivor 2. It's absolute arcade junk food but I find it super replayable. Well, so long as you aren't playing the Dungeon Mode on PS2 anyway.

I don’t have anything like this. I view mediocrity as both a lack of quality and lack of enjoyment. If I get any enjoyment out of something then it’s not entirely mediocre to me.

Alien Hominid is a poorly designed game that largely got attention for the humor and art style. It's mediocre, but the included PDA mini-games are awesome and I love them.
