The Game
There we go, got that out of the way early. I guess I should do this since Im about to hit that first forum level.
I dunno, what can I say that you havent already read in an introduction post in the past 25 years or more?
If youve seen any of my posts its not hard to guess I shitpost. Threefold reasoning incase youre curious
1. I like making lame ass obvious jokes when given the open invitation.
2. Folks enjoy a bit of humor if clever enough
3. Having done forums for far too long, I get very thousand yard stare when I see a thread that asks something common as hell or generic as hell, this type of cyclical Jack Garland repetition can drive me crazy, and if the thread is going to exist, Im gonna add a bit of life into it.
Outside of that? Introposts tend to be played out
So lets talk about Racing Lagoon, you heard about this one?
Dig it, PS1 racing rpg game. Easiest way I can explain it. Fuckin Golden age 90s Square Soft said to themselves
"Hey, lets grab the dude that did Bahamut Lagoon which we all agree is peak yeah? Lets grab him, let him form a team, throw some fucks in there, oh and that chick and dude that will end up doing FFXI Play Online and FFX-2 music? Lets throw those two on this shit. Now, lets have em make Need For Speed Underground 2 years before Black Box found the formula across with Final Fantasy VII and wrap it all in a nice aesthetic that has cross familiarity with Einhander, FFVIIs Midgar Section and Parasite Eve...in fact?
Lets throw some fuckin FFVIII Pocketstation styled functionality in there too, have em save their cars on their mem card so they can take it to their friends to battle, or to copy over to their campaign! Alright now lets set this bitch at the turn of the Millennium in 1999's Yokohama Drift Scene, yeah! Where the Daikoku is! Oh oh now lets go fucking out to real car meets and get in the scene for research oh oh while were at it right?
MOVE Tuning shop? Lets hire them to make a show car we can take to trade shows? What? Theyve got an R33 Skyline that was actually used by a member of the most famous illegal street racing team in Japan? Mid Night? Print that shit! Oh oh oh oh lets get the FFXIII Writer Guy to write the story to the game too, itll even parallel Nomuras Kingdom Hearts in some ways. Oh oh and the language will be so meticulously poetic that itll give the game a nickname of RPG(Racing Poem Game).
And we need to get this shit done under a year? We got this."
This is a very Americanized explanation of how Racing Lagoon came to be but I think it covers core premise and appeal.
If youve never played it, Ill tell you theres no other racing game like it, nor will there ever be. If youre a fan of Square, Japan, Y2K Aethetics, JDM cars, Tuner Culture, or funky ass RPGs, theres something in there for you that you might enjoy.
And for some of you, you might hear the R. And if you do, welcome. I heard it, and it lead me back to Japan after 20 years, right to Yokohama. There something magical about this game if you can hear the call of the R.
Good luck and thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
