Be honest, do you play more, the older or the modern gen games?

For the last 1 or 2 years mainly older games. I just don't have the time anymore to sit through hour long cutscenes or exposition dumping to get into the main part of the game. Old games are best in this regard where you just plug and play.

I personally play mostly older games and occasionally a new game, may get the new Tokyo Xtreme Racer on my PC. Though i very much stick to my PS3 and soft modded PS2 hooked up to a CRT TV. I also take my modded PSP around, big Sony guy. Mostly play Rockstar titles and racing games. I still get together with friends and spend a few hours doing splitscreen on cod mw2, bo2, gran turismo and such. My PSP fulfill my emulation needs as I just do PS1, Sega Genesis and GBA. I love some Fatal Labyrinth or FFTA for waiting in offices . Good indie games have been coming out/are being developed such as my personal favorite Night Runners.

Now new games have very much fallen in quality, such as seen with my beloved Gran Turismo, oh how has its single player campaign been reduce to ashes and now an online connection is required to it access more game play which is just online multiplayer. Customization downgraded and none of the liveries from sport can be brought over. Its been very clear AAA game companies have decided to put less effort into titles seeing financial gains as a priority and quality craftsmanship last. I find it unfortunate when the gaming community sees "SJW/Woke" things as the sole reasoning for the lack of effort put into these newer games that require loads of patches after launch to even run stable at times. Video games have had a history of being inclusive to other races, neurodiverse people, women and LGBT. People of such backgrounds have even made major contributions to the creation of some of our beloved favorite titles and preservation of them,

The Grand Theft Auto series is actually a good example of "wokism" in games as it encapsulates a lot of the very complex culture and society of USA within a fictional satirized city based on a major cities within the USA. 2004's San Andreas had a black male protagonist which Rockstar made sure to pay homage to Black culture throughout the entire game with its soundtrack, art, missions, dialog, references and tiny character details. 2008's GTA IV had a Eastern European war veteran illegal immigrant as its lead. It is a enthralling revenge story with elements of the American Dream. The difficulties of integrating into different culture and environment for Niko is very much explored and discussed with other in game characters along with the trauma that they live with from past life events. Mental health is discussed and even treated such as with Dwayne, who when Niko first meets him it is because Playboy wanted to check on his depressed old friend recently released from prison. Niko is even friendly to gay people as seen with Bernie and defends him from a homophobe in the mission Hating the Haters. There many more examples to pick through in the GTA series and there is also negative representations but context is key. A lot of these examples can fall into ones own personal "too woke" rating which is unfortunate as there is hard work put into to these characters.

At the end of the day gamers have a choice in what they play. More than ever its been apparent that as a whole quality is desired, not just from a graphical and technical aspect, but by the worlds, tales, moments, and wonders that these virtual worlds can hold. Also with the experiences with other people, online or right nexr to you.

I play older games more for 3 reasons mostly; emulation makes them more accessible, they tend to take up much less space and are easier on my PC. After my xbox one broke down I can't really play more demanding games.

I really did try to maintain an open mind about gens 8 and 9, especially because gen 8 was the first generation where I was allowed to purchase M-rated games, but it really just isn't the same in almost any respect. The industry-wide trend of appealing to normaldregs for extra kizash started with gen 6 and especially with Fils-Aime, but I maintain to this day that gen 7 was still the best overall and that the mainstreamlined aspects of the games and hardware didn't really make any of it unsalvageable until a year or two into Xbone versus PS4. I genuinely can't think of a single AAA game from 2013-2020 I actually like. I give some slack on stuff like Cuphead and TBOI or whatever, but it's just not the same, even with them - and, once again, they're not niche games, they're extremely popular, it's just that they were made independently.

I've been playing a lot of older games recently.

I know there are many great new games out now but i'll play them once they become old.

Mostly older but I try to play a healthy dose of old and new. New stuff being largely indie games but I love Yakuza series and Fromsoft games plus I try to give popular AAA games a chance when I can. Right now I wanna play KCD II but i think ill wait till i have a better computer.

My collecting of late has been more older gen but my current plays are current gen/PC only titles that are shorter to kill or remakes into current gen/PC release. So that take that with what you will.

I donโ€™t distinguish, thereโ€™s enough room on my shelf for any of em, though not always enough time in The day to give every game a fair chance, which doesnโ€™t mean theyโ€™re bad.

Just bought Relayer, Legend of the Tetrarchs, Manafinder and Wild Arms 4 ?

I feel like current gamers have slipped into this weird headset of โ€œyour not gonna trick me into liking this game/Iโ€™m too good for this game/I donโ€™t need to give you a chance I have many other options.โ€ Mentality that lets them cut off modern games before they finish talking.

Most of us prefer older games, is it because we grew up in that era/generation? I play both, but some new games are not bad either!

Main reason I stuck to emulation is because I decided to stick to older games

Now that I think about it there were only 4 games I've played in the past 5 years that would be considered 'modern' sorta ... but even they're getting old themselves
GTA San Andreas DE on mobile ... the three games I played that played on the PS4 were just Atelier Shallie - Alchemists of the Dusk Sea, Secret of Mana remake, GTA V ...

Otherwise yeah I found myself playing the older titles since they weren't so heavy on the hours needed to complete

I mainly play older games (mostly on emulators), most of the newer ones take up too much space for me or require hardware with very good specifications to run smoothly at all

Maybe it's just me, but I've found a lot of Switch games having "blurry" graphics despite being modern (and also expensive), and I was thinking: "When I played SAO:HR and YS8 on Vita I was like "Wow, beautiful graphics" and now, on a newer console, I am like... let down". Also, I'm not playing on PS4/5 or PC so it's not like I'm used to super hd/4k/ultralarge screen graphics. Also, I'm not all obsessed by graphics, but still, if I don't like them...
In any case, I've played a good number of titles on Switch and enjoyed them, but right now I have no plans to buy anything for it and I find myself going back mostly to Vita, and sometimes also to 3ds.

I'm inclined to say that I play more modern games, but some are remakes of retro titles. I still play a lot of SNES games too.

I'd say I'm close to 50/50. Though it depends on what you mean by modern generation. If we're talking about anything newer, indie games included, then yeah, 50/50 works. If you mean modern big hits, it'd be skewed very much in favor of older games/styles. I've just been burned one too many times by new releases, I was enjoying myself plenty with God of War Ragnarรถk, Horizon Forbidden West and Ghost of Tsushima, but I just dropped them suddenly because, I dunno, whatever. I spent a bit of time looking and, honestly, I don't think I've finished a "big" release since 2020. I don't even know what exactly turned me off them, I just put them down for the day and never wanted to go back. x)

The big companies are just really pissing me off too. The biggest thing is the rapid execution and absorption of staff and developers. That's nothing new, who liked Westwood anyway? It's not like Dune 2 basically created RTS games as we know them now or anything. Embracer Group and NetEase can go to hell, along with many others. Can't have modest hits anymore, a game needs to make 100x it's profit in a week or people and/or studios get nuked, even if the game was received very well. Blah blah blah, I don't have anything new to say so I'll just stop rambling. I think places like this are more than aware of modern day video game practices. Frankly, I hope most "big" and/or live service games just choke to death and all the talented workers go off to form worthwhile studios.

I really don't have a set choice Some days and just like "oh I want to play this game from over twenty years ago" Mainly the ps2 era. ~Does anyone else feel old~ And other days I want to play the newest popular Title

It's a bit difficult to say. I've been emulating for a long time now so I wanna say older, but I also play quite a bit on my PS4/PS5 so maybe mostly modern. Funnily enough half of my games on the PS5 are games that aren't from the "modern" gen( classic Mega Man, Mega Man Battle Network, Zero Collection, Devil May Cry collection). Also, I rarely buy new new games I think the exceptions recently was for Persona 3 Reload and for SMT V Vengeance.

I will say that I have been getting back into emulating a lot more recently mostly for PS2. My PCSX2 emulator has been rather busy recently

Honestly to me it feels like most gamers, especially younger ones (Zoomers and especially Gen Alpha) don't realize how insanely stacked the 6th gen alone was. Not even a console thing imo, sure the PS2 was leading, but factor in ALL consoles of the time, and then also add the PC and you'll see what I mean. This is also ignoring the previous Gen, which makes things even more insane. I personally hated the 7th Gen, that's when I stopped gaming for a few years, everything was some carbon copy garbage TPS/FPS that looked like vomit, I hated all of those crappy games and I still do. I went full on retro+indie, problem solved. Modern AAA games are a joke!

My PC can't play anything past PS4 Pro/Early PS5 games, even though I'd love to play DOOM TDA.

Not going to buy a new console or PC rigs, just to play a new game or two.
Too expensive.

There are so many retro games I've missed out on, or crave to replay.

Depends where we draw the line at "modern", but if current generation + generation prior are "modern" then I definitely prefer "older" games.
On the One X and then eventually Series X my most played games were backwards compatible games mostly from the 360 gen. Those being primarily GTA IV, Halo (sure they are all playable in The Masterchief Collection made for the "modern" gen, but the latest game in that collection was from 2012. i own all the 360 versions digitally anyways so i'll play those sometimes.), pretty much most valve games released on the 360 and Perfect Dark Zero. if not on the new consoles then i will be playing them offline on an actual 360 since i have them all on disc and thankfully nowadays i have all the maps/ dlc installed.

On PC, apart from Halo MCC I pretty much exclusively play Valve games on steam which are a good 90% from 2004-2009.
without making this miles long, when im in the mood ill turn off the xbox or pc and sit down with my wii or PS2 and just enjoy some old THPS, GTA, Zelda or Mario. I'll even go as far back as ps1 games for some og RE or tomb raider, but for that i both like to be in the mood AND have a sufficient period of free time ahead of me so im not having to leave a level half completed.

One thing that does turn me off of modern games is that most games today have so many editions at such different prices, or if it's a multiplayer game i.e Cod or Halo infinite it will have microtransactions up the wazoo which is a big turn off.
I also find modern games harder to look at because of all the extra details everything has accompanied by the strong lighting and reflections that it's straining and "confusing" for my eyes though i understand thisis more of a problem to do with the type of games I play

Ever since I was born, I have leaned towards how older games are designed. Back then, these companies would make their games actually fun and intuitive to play because they are working with the limited hardware. But now since we're living in a society where every form of game is possible, the need for gimmicks is no longer needed, sucking out the unique experiences that make the older consoles unique.

I Play mostly older games up to the 6th generation(including pc titles of around that era), with a few exceptions.
Newer games that I liked are mostly either fan made or small studio driven.
To put it simply and apolitical, my impression of Modern gaming can be resumed with the next phrase: To much "invasion of modern philosophies" and little to nothing in the creativity spectrum.

I absolutely play older games way more. I have a pretty set list that I replay yearly, and the majority of them are older/retro.
