i never found turbo tunnel hard, it's not "random" patterns, sure it goes faster but it's still a pattern
maybe i'm just really good at that kinda stuff, timing and memory.
it always seems a LOT of players hate turbo tunnel, to me thats not the HARDEST thing in battletoads
it's actually my favorite part in any battletoads game,
I managed to beat the game, with only one whole game over and restart (no save states/cheats/warps)
but 2 player was pretty bad lol, like others said anyone dies you BOTH restart.
on the newer xbox/PC batletoads i love that games turbo tunnel and the friend i was playing with thought i was mental LOL (as i did the whole thing only crashing ONCE, first time i ever played it too)

note, shovel knight on ONLY Xbox/PC has a battletoads level and turbo tunnel part included
Turbo tunnel probably gets all the attention because it's the first difficulty spike, and where most people will give up. But it's not that bad really, once you memorize it you can basically get though it with your eyes closed. Since it's the third level even if you game over (without abusing save states, rewind and stuff) you can get back there pretty quickly to practice.
Volkmire's Inferno is the real deal imo, for me that's the actual hardest level in the game. I usually lost at least one life on the random bullets section, and the last stretch of that level with the fire walls goes extremelly fast and is really hard to keep up even after you memorize the route.

I was playing this game on RARE Replay a long time ago, the first three levels are easy until i got to tubular level, mamamia it was very hard, very, very hard and i ``completed`` that level using a hidden portal to jump to a following level and i stopped in the snake level i think and that is my experience with battletoads.
Correction: i was talking about turbo tunnel not tubular, tubular is hard but its easy, turbo tunnel on the other hand....

Hot take, I always felt RARE get more credit than they deserved, especially among the Nintendo fanbase, their style usually consists of two concepts, phallic jokes everywhere and making visuals that push the hardware which gives a false sense of hope.

RARE games tend to have an amazing opening level then it goes downhill from there, shoving way too many unnecessary gimmicks, forcing FPS in every genre, and unforgiving difficulty, that you start wondering whatever happened to the game you were playing.

This game is undoubtedly one of the most difficult beat 'em up games I've ever played and it's because from the second level the difficulty goes up especially the crows, those that bite your rope making you lose a life for falling deep into the precipice if you don't defeat it in time and not to mention the third level that doesn't seem so difficult at first but the learning curve shoots up in the bike sections of Turbo Tunnel where you have to have good timing to avoid a crash into the walls and avoid an instant-kill for a crash but the more you advance the faster the motorcycle goes, making it almost impossible to avoid the walls because of how fast it is and also that the game is punishing if you play 2 Players because if player 1 or 2 lose all their lives, both players will have to continue the game and start the level from the beginning, so the game tells you that if one fails, they fail The 2 and on top of that you only have 2 continue to pass the game so it is very limited in itself.
