There's those asshole guys in Kid Icarus on the side scroller levels.

My first computer game had a Robin Hood ghost that, because you had to disturb his grave to get a shovel you need to complete the game, would randomly turn up and go "I hid your [whatever item]" and you'd have to backtrack to the grave if it was something you needed. Once you got an amulet you could make him go away, but man... every time I saw this screen, I was already unhappy

Funny you mention this, because I played JSRF today and Clutch stole all of my Graffiti Souls, and you have to find him in order to retrieve them and get moving with the story @w@

The thieving elves in Golden Axe are the best type, because you can get more back from them then they took from you. Golden Axe had A+ presentation. Those little sleeping scenes between levels, the map showing your travels, the character select screen. Very impressive for a late '80s game.

I remember another one: the shopkeeper in Malaga in Sword of Vermilion. He makes you buy an item and then takes all of your gold and your swords. Later in the game he'll give you the Sword of Vermilion but that only barely makes up for it.

Hahaha, I looked up the cast before starting JSRF and thought Clutch was the coolest character design. Couldn't wait to play as him. If only I'd known how much of a little shit he'd end up being.
