When people ask me "Strategist, what's the weirdest JRPG game you've ever played?" I have a simple answer. Back in 2008 one of my college mates told me about this indie SNES JRPG style parody game based on Charles Barkley. He insisted that the game was great and worth checking out. I thought it would be another low effort flash game or something of that sort. But actually, it was kind of a fun Super Mario RPG style game. The artwork for the game is ripped out from various SNES NBA themed games like Michael Jordan's Chaos in Windy City and Charles Barkley Shut Up and Jam. It plays like one of those RPG Maker games but of slightly higher quality. I rarely enjoy comedy/parody games like these. But this one seemed to get how to parody JRPG tropes and be a fun game at the same time.

The premise is wild and fun if you enjoy random references to NBA players and Space Jam.

Story summary:

"The story revolves around Charles Barkey and his son Hoopz Barkley. In 2041 "post-cyberpocalyptic Neo New York", Charles Barkley performs a powerful "Chaos Dunk" at a basketball game, inadvertently killing most of the people in attendance. As a result, basketball is outlawed and many basketball players are hunted down and killed.

In 2053, another Chaos Dunk is performed in Manhattan, killing millions. Barkley is blamed for the Chaos Dunk and is hunted by the B-Ball Removal Department, led by Michael Jordan"

The player can recruit various NBA players like a cybernetic Vince Carter and the great grandson of Lebron James.

I'd be surprised if anyone has played this. But it is such a weird game that it deserves to be discussed.

A sample of the random stupidity in the game:

Technically it wasn't released, so doesn't count. My vote for weirdest is the Super Chinese/Ninja Boy series....I loved culture brain games, but sadly wasn't enough love to save them.

I'm curious, what made those weird?

You didn't play them? Personally I like what they did with Super Chinese World 3. Instead of the regular Action Rpg, you can set a setting to turn it into a turn based jrpg....That was freaking awesome when i played it back in the 2000s...before it got an english patch. Course you then have the long list of wacky shenanigans and silliness.
