Source: https://segaxtreme.net/resources/bangai-o-brightness-restoration.459/ These patches restore the original brightness as seen in the Japanese release, Bakuretsu Muteki Bangaioh, to the Europe, USA or USA (VGA-patched) versions of the game. TapamN's VGA patch is included.

Another randomly weirdly clearly-wrongly darkened game is The Cliffhanger - Edward Randy (a balls-to-the-wall bonkers 2D side scrolling arcade game with a vibe like Indiana Jones).
Would that be the Japanese Vs the rest of the world arcade versions?

So... why did they make the graphics darker to begin with? Or is this another one of gaming's great mysteries?

Although unfortunately that game doesn't have a patch to fix it, so the only workaround to adjust the brightness is through the Contrast, Brightness, and Gamma in Slider Controls in the MAME Emulator, obviously.

Great work , a patch that is much needed for a great title , analouge support next :)

Game plays better IMO if you go into settings and change controls to abxy type. Could probably turn it into a proper twin stick shooter by altering controls in redream or flycast but that's beyond me.

Definitely looks better with this hack too.

I've gotta use that on my enemies sometime.
"Haha, are you at top speed or just very small"

With the increased brightness it looks lighter than before and even more visible to some and this is what it could have been in this game from the beginning.

Nice, I always thought the screenshots looked weirdly and ridiculously dark. I didn't have a darkness when actually playing, just in screenshots I saw online, because my CRT shader in emulation has better gamma or brightness or whatever it is.
