So, recently, the blu-ray box set of Babylon 5 I ordered arrived today, and after giving it a spin, I have two thoughts: One: this is the way to go for this show and I hope that (since he has the rights and not Warner) J. Michael Straczynski teams up with someone like Arrow to give the four Babylon 5 movies a similar treatment. And Two: HOLY HELL I FUCKING HATE SPINDLE CASES! The show's packaging is a massive spindle case with several discs stacked on top of eachother, and man does it hurt like hell! I feel like I'm gonna break either a disc or my thumb trying to remove it.

And this is just one example of many bad cases for DVDs and Blu-rays. I'd like to hear your thoughts on various bad physical media cases, be they spindle or cardboard or what-have-you.

This one became a meme back in the day

I haven't bought any media in some time outside of books, but I used to really dislike the way cases started having the cutouts underneath the disc, where it looks like a flower kinda.

Eco cases. There are so many 360 games with cracks in the center because of those stupid cases. The best way to remove games from these cases is placing them on a solid surface and then pressing straight down to release the disc.

I feel that bro.
the official DVD Complete Series and Movie Trilogy boxsets for the original run of Rugrats have similar cases
in fact, they were the main reasons why I decided to get a disc binder in the first place
another release I got with a bad case is the Best Buy Exclusive Blu-Ray/DVD combo steelbook for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse
don't get me wrong, it's a good display piece and all but I felt like I was about to break the discs every time tried to I get them out of that thing so I when I got my aforementioned disc binder, I opted to put them there instead of the gorgeous but admittedly poorly designed prison that they originally came in

I have a few examples:

Terminator 2: Ultimate Edition DVD
You have to almost break the disc in half just to get it out of the spindle.

SpongeBob: The First 100 Episodes (2020 reissue)
The case is so cheaply designed. Also the spindles don’t hold the discs properly sometimes. Sometimes when I open the plastic cases, the discs come loose.

Various Triple Pack DVDs
Instead of having a flap for each individual disc,(which they should’ve fucking done instead) they stack them on a spindle. Meaning if you want to get the second or third discs, you have to take the one above it out first.

3DO Cases
Oversized for no fucking reason

The GameStop Generic Cases
The horror of all used games. Cheap plastic, typed on title, and generic template.

The way they packed in the dvds is horrible, and the dvd holder inside the case breaks easily. I pretty much had to give it away to somebody you who just wanted it for the cover.

when sega carts went from the plastic cases with the slots for the cart and booklet to the paper boxes - I would carefully flatten them since I didn't want to damage them

There's TWO AGVN videos about this btw

Every time I get a Criterion release it reminds me how nice and sturdy plastic Blu-ray cases could be, but the average ones are pretty thin and sometimes feel very flimsy when they go with the design that uses even less plastic. 4K, being the premium option, is at least in sturdier packaging in my experience.

I feel like we're just stuck in an era where physical media is often to going to be an afterthought so they cheap out when designing things like those TV show rereleases where you get like a few chunky but still not very big cases cases containing several seasons each and fifteen discs fall out whenever you open one of them.
