Today, i watched the worst kind of Drek, i honestly i expected less of a big studio trying to adapt a Internet Meme past its prime, and yes, i know which one you mean you know, of course i mean...
American Horror Stories' episode Backrooms
Why are you looking me like that, what movie, what are you talking about? *Checks internet* Ahh, so there's a movie... anyway
For the uninformed, American Horror Stories is an anthology spin-off of American Horror Story, basically put, instead of each season being its own plot, its every episode, the series itself is a hit or miss, in fact the only reason i got into AHS being after learning about they adapting one of Internet's most iconic creepypastas since Slendy, so i gave it a go, and after the credits rolled, this was my Oniric Yokai Reaction
Let me save you your time watching the ep for you
After a promising intro (AFAIK each episode has its own intro) with the only nail hitting of the chapter, more specifically something resembling the iconic ! Level, we get to the episode itself, in this plot, a man named Daniel has cut himself of the world after his son got Dess Holiday'd, refusing to leave and focusing in a script he is writing, after telling someone that told him to touch grass to piss off, he opens the door of his study to end up in the iconic... convenience store aisle?
There he sees a masked man seemingly talking to his missing son Roman, when trying to get to him he is suddenly back into reality, thinking it was some sort of hallucionation he learns he was in fact missing, also his son is finally found... dead! (Dramatic thunder) hmmmn, i smell something, a smelly smell screaming "twist", but in the meantime let's check how they mischaracterize the Backrooms some more, after a rant that totally makes Daniel look innocent he leaves, ending later again in the Backrooms, to be fair the scene is legitimally creepy, and we do get to see the iconic yellow labything level, with masked man chasing Daniel towards some sort of room where he sees Roman again, this time bleeding from the eyes, corny, yes, but the only time i got scared at the episode
Some more Antics later Daniel finds totally not Kane Pixels explaining the Backrooms, that in this iteration are (Bear with me) some sort of Silent Hill-esque realm where you need to confess your sins to be released and WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE SAME BACKROOMS!?, the Youtuber explains he is in jail for a Hit And Run and he saw the Backrooms there, after the longest and most boring scene of the episode where Daniel talks with the Youtuber, we get a twist... if you were not paying attention
Turns out after an argument with his wife, Daniel did kill his son strangling him in the park, the cops are surrounding him, so he tries to gun them, but seemingly (read, obviously) gets holed and ends again in the Backroomnt's a Red Woman hold Roman's corpse and tells him to friggin confess already, Daniel promises to confess and the Red Woman lets him go... or not, because horror anthology, turns out Daniel is in a literal waiting room, his turn being a real long wait ahead with his only entertainment being "Good parenting" Magazines to once again hammer the point that killing your own son isn't exactly "Number 1 Dad" mug material, the end
The episode was in fact a letdown, i mean, the Backrooms has tons of interpretations, but they failed the target in so many levels, for starters, the horror of the Backrooms is that it isn't some sort of purgatory, but the horror is that anyone can enter, but no one can leave, that is what makes it scarier than a generic purgatory world, they didn't even need monsters, since beings stuck in literal nowhere is scarier than being in supernatural timeout, at certain points it was obvious that they simply added a generic purgatory plot into the Backrooms' lore and called it a day
Oh boy, trust me, i wish that was the only flaw, but the episode is bad without it being a messy adaptation of the Backrooms, the story moves at slow pace, the main character is so grating that you want him punished even before the twist, the twist itself is not only paint-by-numbers, but also so obvious... and lastly that ending, no, they didn't, they can't, that is...yes it is... they did... is that... THEY FRIGGIN RIPPED OF THE ENDING OF BEETLEJUICE, they capped a nothing burger episode with an ending that rips a movie that was more or less this episode but ACTUALLY GOOD!!!
I like horror anthologies, i grew with Goosebumps and once i was old enough my mom showed me her favorite anthology and also mine: Tales form the Crypt, so i entered not only the episode, but the show itself with an open mind, the man series not being my cup of tea, i watched some episode, the series itself... is hit and miss, but overall nothing too bad, but this episode, it's crystal clear the episode was made to try to ape on an Internet phenomena and once again, doing what they wanted with just some surface level similarities
Mercifully this episode barely dented the Backrooms (Admitibly niche) popularity, some interpretations still keep the infinite yellow labyrinth floating, the most famous being Kane Pixels, who is the man behind the proper Backrooms movie, you came so far matey, overall the episode is a total waste, not only of time, but also of a fresh idea for horror, sadly used as the skin for a typical "Hell is us" plot, give this episode a pass
