Audiobooks

I know that some people really dislike the concept of audiobooks (which is fine by me), but they have been nothing short of a miracle for my fidgety, restless self.

While I have gone through countless books the "usual" way, I'll admit that I love the idea of multitasking my literally experience even more — there's nothing quite like listening to a good story or to someone's struggles while also pulling insane stunts or wasting bikers on the streets of Vice City.

There's a certain groove to it, and I have gotten addicted to it.

Plus, I once did a book exchange with someone here and we both went through the audiobook versions of our picks, making each other's experiences all the smoother.

What are your thoughts on this medium? Do you have a favorite audiobook?

I have a love/hate relationship with audiobooks. I hate audiobooks for the fact that there's so many of them but hardly any regarding the series I'm interested in, sadly.

That being said, I still love audiobooks because I too am a restless busy body. Some of my favorite picks are usually horror, mystery, and sci-fi audiobooks.

Off the top of my head these are: Tezcatlipoca by Kiwamu Sato (Crime drama), the Vampire Hunter D series by Hideyuki Kikuchi (Dark fantasy), and Gone To See The River Man by Kristopher Triana (Horror).

Do be careful though, Gone To See The River Man is in the subgenre of horror called “Splatterpunk” that goes into extreme detail of the atrocities happening in the story. So, if you're squeamish, I would skip it.

I also have a love/hate relationship but it's mostly about pride. I love audiobooks for the fact that they make actually consuming literature so much easier, and I love the fact that they're more immersive as well. The Borrasca audio drama was a fantastical experience, and The Road also has a very good reading by a guy with a fantastic, fitting voice.

The process makes it easier to envision and immerse yourself in the world and characters because the voices add texture and depth to the writing that only audio can give.

On the other hand though, I feel like a brainrotted zoomer for struggling to read books the normal way. I think that things like attention span and other mental capabilities are important and reading books is one of the best antidotes to struggles in that area.

I usually listen to podcasts or audiobooks while I'm working, so I have no issues with them. I do take offense at people saying they are reading a book when they are listening to it.

Words have meaning, damn it.

I don't have a problem with audio books in general. I think they're a great way for people to enjoy stories and subjects while doing other things like work and chores.
The issue with me is when people listen to audio books and claim they "Read" a book. It's a totally different sense. as far as I know, your ability to absorb information visually vs auditory is even processed differently. meaning your physical experience of it and what information you absorb (and how) is different between the two mediums.
it would be like me looking at lyric and music sheets for an album and saying I listened to it. or reading a script and saying I saw a movie. or one that really annoys me is when people watch a let's play and say they played the game.
all BS. I'm sorry.
you listen to audio books. you do not read them. it may seem like semantics, but I don't care. I'll die on this hill.

But anyway, I don't have an issue with audio books themselves. they're nice.

When they get a voice actor for each character, I'm all for it. The way it's now (with one voice actor doing everyone) is cringe.

Audiobooks are not for me, I get distracted easily when listening. Actual reading with my eyes is my choice mostly.

Some people listen and read the same book at the same time. It even has a cool name, immersive reading, which sounds really distracting for me as I'm not a multitasking person in general.

Audio dramas are cooler I think.

I'm a silent person and my head going to ache if i listening for too long. So I prefer to taking books by traditional way.

And here I thought I was the only one who did this. Listening to audio books while gaming. I'm also pretty fidgety and restless too. I have to keep my hands busy or I'll start picking at my nails and stuff which I want to keep looking pretty.

Anyway, a few years back I ran across a site called Decklin's Domain which had several audio books including Dickens, Jane Austen, Sherlock Holmes ect. Books that would take me a whole lotta' time to sit still and read, so I'm thankful for that site because I loooove old stories and stuff.

You're not at all wrong. The imagination processes what you actually read much differently than what you listen to.

I discovered audiobooks quite a while ago when my grandmother, who suffered from macular degeneration in her later years, could no longer read. My father bought her several audio cassettes of novels read by well-known voice actors, and it was a real godsend for her.
I’ve used apps like Audible in the past, but when I’m reading something, I still prefer paper pages and the smell of print. It’s the same way I feel about music I truly love—I prefer to focus on it completely, with my full attention.

I remember we listened to audiobooks in class and I was like the only one that wasn't sick of it. I am remarkably dumb so audiobooks are really helpful by making me focus on the actual content of the book to my full potential rather than falling into the pit of just reading words and failing to understand the meaning without needing to try a little harder.

Nah, I just really like getting new ones — I'll probably spend close to a year straight listening to them before I run out.

I can't get started on the next one I want, for whatever reason.
