Atypical RPG recommendations?

Just Saga
Great stuff! Your commitment to the thread is much appreciated!
I'm guessing you're a Saga fan then... I never played myself so not only did you put me onto these three games (obscure pulls always pique my interest), this is also the push I needed to check Saga stuff out

Hmm, I'm kind of a saga fan, but as most I don't like all of them. It's a super divisive series - even fans usually love some and have others. So, I like Frontier 1, but don't like 2, I like the gameboy sagas, Romancing Saga 3, as well as Emerald beyond. I disliked Romancing 2 and Minstrel Song. I'm pretty split on JRPGs in general - anything with long cutscenes/narrative dumps or super basic battle systems really turns me off, so your thread spoke to me. I think tactical rpgs are probably my favorite, especially if they are a bit hard, but I'll give anything unusual a try. I also like DRPGs in general. If you like my recommendations I can probably scrape up some others :)

Treasure of the Rudras is a pretty wild ride all around. Highly recommend. Its 'lore' is VERY similar to what's going on in a massively popular series that came 10+ years later, and you will not be able to guess which one.

I've been playing a.... dragonball z game lately. Super Saiya Densetsu for the snes. I should lead off by saying that if you don't like dragonball, ignore the rest of this text. Wouldn't recommend this to someone who doesn't care about the series. It's... questionably programmed and the fan translation is iffy, but it's kind of amazing that it holds together at all. Battle system is card-based card with multiple items that manipulate cards/stats.

That isn't why it strikes me as atypical though, although the battle system is pretty unique. It's following the storyline of an anime, and normally such games are kinda strict, (this one is too in how you're 'supposed' to approach some major battles) but this one has a huge amount of variables and events that can play out in different ways. Like, depending on how you do in a certain minigame, Goku can arrive to the battle with Nappa and Vegeta either really early or really late. I think there's 7+ different 'times' he can show up. You can take Vegeta out before he turns into a monkey, all of the Z-fighters can survive and go to Namek, and you can even keep someone in Captain Ginyu's body after he does his body-switch technique. That last one's a glitch though. Oh, and like I said, the Z-fighters can survive, but they can also die at any time. And if they die, they're gone forever.

It's hard to describe, but basically it feels fairly unique in how 'loose' it feels, especially for an anime game. There's just a path the player can walk that's wider than normal, closer to a crpg than a jrpg.
Your profile pic (I think it's from VP, maybe Lucien's friend Claire?) reminded me to recommend to OP both Valkyrie Profile and its sequel, VP: Silmeria! Both have very unique battle and game progression mechanics that have rarely if ever been replicated.

In the original, you are tasked with preparing for Ragnarok, and your actions on the world map (where you go, which events you choose to view, etc.) subtract from the overall time left until that fated hour. The battle system is an awesome twist on turn-based; your four party members are assigned to the shape buttons of the PS1 controller, and the combinations/timing you used them in actually matters (enemies have hitboxes like it' a gd fighting game!!).

Similarly, VP: Silmeria has a pseudo-turn based system dependent on button timing and hitboxes but this time, you can move around in a (rather large!) fully 3D space. Although the overworld is fairly standard JRPG fare, the equipment/skill progression system is really deep and addictive. Trying to hit enemies just right in order to knock certain body parts off (similar to Monster Hunter, actually!) to sell/trade/use in the unique shop system is also weirdly fun.

Both also have some light (although occasionally infuriating) platforming/puzzle elements, and have pretty unique premises...Not to mention the obviously gorgeous art direction and graphics. Both have also aged surprisingly well (in my opinion). I could go on for days, but I'll let you check them out if you want to learn more.

Hey, I've you've got em, I'll take some trpg and drpg suggestions - I feel you on poor storytelling and lame mechanics. I don't have much experience with trpgs at all but am very interested. The Sting stuff looks rad but I'm working my way up to it, and I'm currently passively picking which Final Fantasy tactics hack to experience that game with. I also played a game called Ambition of the Slime which was hell and great. But yeah that's pretty much it so I'm a trpg novice. DRPGs on the other hand I really fuck - if you got anything wild in that catagory that would be sick.

This looks sick, thank you. I saw this game crop up in another discussion but didn't pay it much mind because it was slightly off topic but laying it out like that has made me interested so cheers :)

I'll second the Shadow Hearts and Koudelka recommendations, they are the perfect blend of horror and turn-based RPG. The later Shadow Hearts games even introduce a really fun, almost fighting game-like combo system to them.

Another out there RPG would be the Legend of Legaia series. The plot is decent, but the real draw is the obviously fighting game inspired combat. You input either high, low, left or right on the d-pad for attacks on your turn, and certain combinations (such as low, right, low) create a special attack at the end of the attack chain. Discovering all the different combinations to learn all the special moves was the main draw of this game.

It's basically what would happen if you took Need For Speed and injected RPG Mechanics into It's veins.
And it was made by none other than SquareSoft (the creators of Final Fantasy)

Dokapon is a series I would recommend, as it's basically a Mario Party-style RPG.
And they have a lot of games across many platforms, like the GBA, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 1, Nintendo Switch, SNES, etc.

Your pfp + blurb, this cover, AND the fact I just beat Parasite Eve and really fell in love with it. Fastest sell in this thread

Edit: just a tidbit. I'm on a discord server with a guy that is making a Need for Speed X FNaF style game and as goofy as that sounds it actually looks sick

String TRPGS: Gungnir is a good Sting game to start with. It's not too weird, but has a lot of cool mechanics, and it pushes you to 'work with what you've got' in a way I really like. Yggdra union is quite a bit tougher and stranger, but awesome once you get into it. Play the PSP version of Yggdra, not the GBA.

The Megaten TRPGS (Devil Survivor) are quite good and kind of novel in the battle system too. The updated 3DS versions have more story and QoL features.

Fae Tactics is a strange take on a TRPG that I think is worth playing, by the people that made Valdis Story, which is an odd metroidvania that I sadly didn't like that much.

And two non-TRPGs, just straight up tactics:
Vantage Master: https://www.falcom.co.jp/vantage/index_e.html A free cool TBS by Falcom that they translated and give away for free. Think Advance Wars, but with strange elemental creatures and a CO who is on the map fighting like the king in chess, but is the piece that summons all the others, and your goal is to kill the enemy summoner in each level. The AI is quite good!

Nectaris (or Military Madness): Imagine advance wars but you don't produce units. Instead there are bases around and you take them to take over the units inside. Many versions but the DOS one has a lot more missions and unit types and I think the nicest graphics/sound. Cool because the battle mechanics (adjacent units increase defence and attack when surrounding enemies) are awesome and the levels are challenging and well made.

I'll think on DRPGs and post some later.
