I doesnt need to push boundaries tbh .What you said about the "legend status" and "mythos" is so true. Growing up, metal bands seemed larger than life, with insane stories. All the Mayhem lore, Ozzy eating the bat, people carving Slayer into their arms, Slipknot huffing dead crows, The Butthole Surfers having sex on stage, etc - bands seemed like gods amongst men, and their folklore grew with their music.
Now its all considered cringe. People shun that kind of stuff now and its resulted in an overall sterile and safe music industry. Nothing in rock or metal is scary or boundry pushing anymore, and any band that deviates from the mold is deemed cringe or problematic and snuffed out.
I genuinely cant think of any modern "mythology" for any newer bands.
Black Sabbath already had already huge impact before the Bat-eating fiasco of Ozzy.
It needs an impact and genuity first . Even boundary pushing stuff were unforseen ideas that suddenly happened and that makes memorable . It came naturally , wasnt forced and its just a simple and maybe stupid idea that was crazy overall.
While Sex on the stage and hurting themselves is kinda cringe ( even Wasp did it with the tour about the crimson idol album with Blacky Lawless banging a nun) , otherwise its still part of the show and underlining the bands style and approach . What really is missing is contrasts . I say it more than often but i even think we actually need hair metal again nowadays . In metal lately we only got more the extreme and hardcore stuff that is rather oversaturating and less or almost nothing to give contrast in a different approach and style that is still awesome to hear .
But i agree wholeheartedly with you that most music is very sterile , outdone and rather safe . Even when i look at older music videos like Morbid angel , Testament , Type o negative and other old bands from the 80s and 90s , they had a serious tone but one that is exciting and was direct with no useless shots of the band just playing in a factory and trying to be wannabe crazy , demonic and just a dry existence of them playing their instruments . EVEN JON MIKL THORS 80s MUSIC VIDEOS ARE PEAK AWESOMENESS IN ITS FLAWED AND CAMPY WAY TOO .
It lacks charisma , stage-presence and a punch behind that ignites excitement from every pore of every fan . Only the legends can mostly provide as long as they walk among us over earths-surface .
