ArenaFPS thread!!!!

There was a time when ut99 was religion for me

I have been so obsessed with Unreal Tournament 1999. I have no idea, but it is just addictive. I have been a long time Quake fan, and I still am, but damn it, Unreal Tournament 1999 just feels great to play.

Right?! I always thought I'd prefer the Quake side of the fence, but no, I think my arena shooter heart belongs to Unreal Tournament. There's just a whole vibe to the game, of late nights listening to drum and bass music, dodge hopping between dark alleys while trying to hit people with the shock rifle combo.

Oh, the vibes and the music. Those are the same positives that make me wholeheartedly believe that the original Unreal is better than Half-Life. The game just looks beautiful and sounds cinematic. Sure, Half-Life has some better gameplay, but when it comes to the atmosphere and the environments? Unreal beats that to nothing but giblets.

I probably am the only person in the world that prefers Quake 4 and Quake Champions over other Quake games in terms of multiplayer yes punch me but i'm not at all sad with the current state of people playing more Quake Live than any other Quake game. Even i can see it's better for the players to have all that much customizable features and dedicated servers, and also a way more optimized game in general.

I've seen so many of you guys enjoy Unreal Tournament, have any of you tried Diabotical? It was the promise of ''bringing back Arena FPS games'' being developed by an oldschool retired caster and pro player. It focuses a lot on dashes similar to UT but still has Quake elements like bunnyhop and strafejump that are way more intuitive imo.
After some time the development got focused in another sucessor of the game called "Diabotical Rogue" but is something more similar to Team Fortress 2 or Overwatch with Roguelike elements but still maintaining a certain Arena FPS feel

I wanted to try out Diabotical but it was stuck on Epic store. ::200mad They do not deserve my money after what they did to Unreal Tournament. I wish someone else would manage to make a UT-like spiritual successor. Most of the ones I tried weren't very good or very well supported.

I played quite a bit of Quake 3 Arena many years ago when it was still relatively new. I tried getting back into it not too long ago and had a rough time though, the rust is real. :loldog

I wish Arena FPS could make a comeback. But I just don't see it ever picking up again. You NEED a mouse and keyboard to keep up, and most video gamers are console players. Quake Champions was wack as well, feels all wonky with all the weird powers and stuff everyone has. Feels like a scuffed version of Unreal Championship 2.

UT99 still the undisputed king idc.

I'm a single player bunny hopper. Currently trying to get through Phantom Fury, but will be back to Quake soon. Probably.
Is that as bad as people say? Phantom Fury I mean, still been wondering about it since it dropped but everyone I've seen says it's wack. I should just get it and try it, can't hurt to try I suppose.

Got back to doing some UT'99 again this week, been having a blast!

I was doing sniper deathmatch in those maps taht are a giant regular room and you're tiny
sometimes there's Redeemer pickups but the maps are so huge, the explosion barely takes out a couple camping spots

a thing I really like about these old arena shooters, is that since they're so simple, there's a lot of space for alternate gamemodes to get silly
why yes give everyone hyper jumps and low gravity and a rapid fire sniper rifle what could go wrong

also the beauty with these maps is how they're always built like an apartment complex inside the furniture and walls, there's tons of little secret paths, windows, ledges, teleporters hidden all over the place
a bookshelf might be a vietcong nightmare of elevators and sniper spots
I got several kills hiding inside of a printer

Evil's Freestyle Sniper Deathmatch was the server, if anyone has the game installed and wants to give it a shot.

I'd like to retry playing AFPS but my mouse is acting weird...
I forgot about that thread but I think my Razer Ouroboros was just being old (I had it for a full decade after all).

I got a new mouse since then. I'd be tempted to do some Sauerbraten.

I have ioquake3 installed and fire it up every now and then for some old school Quake. Used to have it on Dreamcast too although I never went online on that.

The best sourceport for Q3A right?

I'm tempted to replay Cube2 when I get more time.

Playing UT with friends was something else.

UT 99 and 2004 are still my fav.
