Maybe i am the sole user on this forum that still likes to play online ArenaFPS but let's try this anyways

Dashers, strafejumpers, bunnyhoppers and crouchsliders of this forum, how are you enjoying your favorite ArenaFPS games? What games are you playing? Quake Champions? Quake Live? Unreal Tournament? Xonotic? maybe even CPMA?
What are your favorite weapons? Do you still have hopes for a new Quake announcement? Are you following any tournaments? Are you more of a LG or Rockets enjoyer? is clan arena the worse gamemode ever made? Discuss (but be civil goddamnit)

i have played none of the game you have listed
however there is a game called straftat that i believe is something like an arena shooting game, and while i am extremely terrible at both it and shooting games in general, i experience great enjoyment playing it with my friends and it has given me interest in trying out the classic arena shooting games
also i do not know who the lady with the collar or the dinosaur are but i like them a lot

I remember playing quake 3 with a couple of friends on school computers when I was in high school, and I almost got suspended for it lmao
Funnily enough, i'm a dirty zoomer not from the golden age of Quake but i always grew up watching my uncle playing the games and just after being older that i had actual interest in investing my time in it. It sure was fucked up losing for so long against veterans but it's super addictive too.
I wish i was alive in an age of people casually playing Quake with friends

I watched some gameplay of this game on youtube and i liked what i've seen, reminds me a lot of a Quake 2 and Quake 3 mod called Urban Terror but with some cool more fast paced twists.
The lady with the collar is called Slash and she is a goth anarchist punk girl that is arguably the fastest character in Quake Champions. The lizard lady is Sorlag and she is a carnivorous acid spitting alien that is sexy as fuck

I miss UT2004, especially with the Chaos mod.
I love Unreal Tournament (never beat Xan too), and i have the chance to play online many years ago, in a lagged server. In a couple of minutes, there was none alive. Besides that, Quake II and Quake III are two of my favourites.
I really miss UT too, i really had the potential to dethrone Quake as the most popular ArenaFPS right now or even possibly become a popular game again. But then we got Epic...

I played quite a bit of Quake 3 Arena many years ago when it was still relatively new. I tried getting back into it not too long ago and had a rough time though, the rust is real. :loldog

I love the mood and design of UT, really it's way ahead of his time. This level in particular, is one of the most relaxing things ever made in videogames to me:

Some of my fondest gaming memories are playing arena shooters on my dads work computer whenever he would bring me in for the day. Love that shit. I'd spend hours just doing bot matches and going nuts with the mutators in OG Unreal Tournament (loved the claymore only matches). UT2004 I also played later on, had a lot of fun with that obviously as it's great. Quake 3 Arena is also GOAT of course, that and OG UT are the ones I spent the most time with.

Favorite weapon has to be the Lightning Gun from various UTs, I loved how you could alt fire the ball then explode it with the primary fire. Runner up is the Quake 3 Flak Cannon. Good times.

Oh, and the obligatory fuck Epic of course.

I'm a single player bunny hopper. Currently trying to get through Phantom Fury, but will be back to Quake soon. Probably.
Oh damn, a fellow Quake 1 runner here? If so, what are you times? I'm definitely not consistent and i never actually record and time my runs since i do it mostly because i think is fun. My full game Single Segment time is 14:00ish if i remember it correctly

I was so obsessed with that lightning gun in UT and doing that explosion right, but i was horrible at it lmao. Also, it wasn't Quake 3 that had the Flak Cannon, it was UT(i love that weapon btw)

If i stay 1 week without playing Quake i already feel like its my first time ever playing lmao

Ahh facing worlds, beautiful map but honestly i might be the only one that disliked it lmao. I don't like sniper maps like the longest yard in quake 3 for example. I prefer the more closed shitfests lmao

what did epic do that created animosity ?
Basically stopped the development from a new Unreal Tournament out of nowhere in order to focus only on Fortnite, and removed all Unreal Tournament games that were available from the stores

Ehhhh you're right, my bad. I blame my apparent false childhood memories on that one. I'll have to go and play Quake 3 again to see what I'm mixing it up with; such a terrible thing, I know.

I never speedran the entire game. I've only submitted two runs for custom maps. I just play single player and I do bunnyhopping, but my play is anything but stellar. Here they are:

This first map I only ran because I was teaching myself to bunnyhop by replaying it over and over.

This thread just reminded me; remember UT3, when it was clearly designed to be a console exclusive before they backed up and release a bad PC port? I played that a good amount on the 360, for some reason, but I have such little memory of the actual game. I think it was third person for some reason?

May have killed the series for awhile, no biggie.

That's cool, i usually don't run custom maps. Nowadays i don't do entire game runs, more like very unoptimized ILs for certain maps lmao

I remember this game, it had an actual very satisfying gunplay and sounds, but all the rest were so slow and clunky. If i recall there is still some small dedicated community that enjoys it lol.

I just want to use this thread as opportunity to show the awesome job of the people at ShaftasticTV. They do an excellent job and organizing, broadcasting and commenting most of the non-giant tournaments from many countries, and even when there is a major local one, they offer a great insider perspective.
Here is their latest Estoty broadcast, commentary from Leadhead as funny and entertaining as usual.

Man I'm so sad I only got into actual arena shooters so many years after their prime. I absolutely love Quake and UT. My favorites for arena play are probably UT'99 and OpenArena (Q3A open source clone) but I have to say I am more on the camp of UT. Speaking of both there's still a few small projects alive nowadays, such as QuakeWorld, Xonotic and Rexuiz (a successor to Nexuiz). Hell, may I even include Titanfall 2 on this list? It's very iconic and just as abandoned by their devs....

I still listen to the UT'99 soundtrack just to vibe, or launch some matches against bots in the evenings. Hell, there are enough servers online to play, too! More than UT2k4 (which is also alive, despite Epic's attempts to kill it)

And no I do not count Splitgate 2 among our beloved genre. The dev's an ass and the launch was a flop.

Ofc! And I doubt we are the only ones.

I know some people will debate me this, but I think it is, I constantly play Halo 1, 2 or 3. I also play from time to time (when there is a good and fun server) UT99. And I used to also play deathmatch on the classic DooM via Zandronum, but the last update is kind of a pain to make it work on linux, so I just cant play atm.

I remember playin Quake Live long time ago, and i honestly didnt like it.

And about a new announcement of Quake... yeah, honestly I prefer they just forget about it. I doubt MS can do something decent with it.

QW and Xonotic mentioned!
I spent too many hours playing with oldheads there just talking crap at late hours. It's funny always being the massively younger one in every server lmao.
I love OpenArena too, but it was hard to find any games for me the last time tried. If i recall there was a 24/7 OpenArena stream on twitch that i liked to watch when i was eating dinner lmao.

Also, for those that enjoy Quake Champions, what are your thoughts on the new update? Personally i want to tell the devs to go fuck themselves say that the decision to limit what server you can join based on ping a very stupid idea, since the playerbase is already so small that sometimes you need to play on higher pings to get some games. I know this decision basically killed the game for a bunch of players of some countries like Japan or Australia.
Its cool seeing Leadhead doing videos like this, i always liked him as a cast and producer on ShaftasticTV and some tournaments, i hope he becomes an even bigger deal in the community

Honestly I don't really like Quake Champions. While I don't think the decision to go "hero shooter" was necessarily bad, it doesn't matter since it STILL lead to losing a huge chunk of it's potential playerbase anyway. And really, I just still don't like the game after all.

Limiting ping, after however many years the game's been out and the playerbase has shrunk? Are they mad? I surely wouldn't be able to get into any actual lobbies EVER now, if I tried.

Yeah i think this was an unanimously horrible reception, idk what they had in mind with this, but at this point they should simply let the community handle things their own way.
Also yeah, the game is pretty fun, specially in it's stage now, but the development was so full of massive problems all around that the game died like all the other new attempts at arenafps. It took them 4 years or so to take the game to a stage where it was actually decent, you can imagine that most people would just abandon the ship by this point. The game basically has one single dev now too

Crisis averted i guess, "thanks" devs.
All the millions of avid Quake Champions players on this forum can rest easy now
